John Dimond Obituary

Dr. John B. Dimond
July 20, 1929 - Sept. 20, 2014
GORHAM -- Dr. John B. Dimond passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at The Gorham House in Gorham.
John was born on July 20, 1929, to Reginald and Celia Dimond in Bristol, R.I. He attended local schools, studied biology and entomology at Rhode Island State University, and earned his Ph.D. in entomology at Ohio State University in 1957.
It was there that he met and married Eva Kellogg. Together they had two sons, William and George. After some time with the Maine Forest Service, John became a professor of Entomology at the University of Maine in Orono.
During his tenure there, he did vital research on the effects of DDT that was used in the 50s and 60s which helped lead to the banning of DDT because of the long term effects it had on wildlife including loon, ospreys and the American Bald Eagle. His researches also lead to the testing and approval of safer ways to control the Spruce Budworm infestations, in the Northern Maine woods.
John had a passion for the environment and outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish, and spent much of his time working to bring back the Atlantic Salmon in Maine. He was the treasurer of the Atlantic Salmon Federation of Maine. He also was one of the founding members of the Veazie Salmon Club. He helped writing letters and sponsoring bills to have dams removed to allow for Atlantic Salmon to spawn. His sons like to say that their father John, was green before being green was popular.
His two sons, William and George, fondly remember the family time spent at the camp on Molunkus Lake in Aroostook County, and summer camping trips in Maine, and the Maritime Proveniences of Canada. John instilled a passion and love for the outdoors in his sons and he will be missed dearly.
John was predeceased by his wife Eva; and his brother Frank from Virginia. Surviving are his sister, Emma Brown of Rhode Island; his two sons, William of Porter, and George of Limington, and their families.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Gorham House for the loving care and devotion they shared during John's stay there. His last days were pleasant and comfortable.
John's wishes were for him and Eva to be interred at the family plot in Bristol, R.I. Arrangements will be announced at a later date. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com.

John was my oldest friend and best friend of my childhood. We lived across the street from each other, had polio together, and roamed Bristol together until he moved to Providence in 1944. I will say a prayer for him, and for Eva and his parents, who were second only to my own
