Roger Ellis Obituary

Roger L. Ellis
March 15, 1941 - September 29, 2014
Roger Lynn Ellis, 73, of Nampa passed away peacefully at a Nampa hospital on September 29, 2014 after a brief illness. Roger was born in Nampa, ID on March 15, 1941 to Harry and Bessie Ellis.
Throughout his school years Roger was involved in Future Farmers of America and shortly after graduation joined the Army National Guard with his older brother Ron. He later became interested in collecting arrowheads in the Owyhees and regularly meeting with his friends for meals. He loved to travel the world, going to such places as Australia, Germany, England, Switzerland, and was days away from leaving for a much anticipated trip to Vienna. Although he always seemed most comfortable at home on the "funny farm" where, after visiting with family and friends, he always had to go home to "batten down the hatches"
Roger lived and worked all his life on the family farm with his father Harry and brother Ron. He looked forward to his visits at the Sale Yard, as much for a slice of pie as for the bovine sales. He later considered himself a rockhound, making cabs and multi-faceted stones, and just recently found he had a natural talent for wood carving. Throughout his many adventures and travels he enjoyed taking pictures and sharing them with people upon his return home.
He is survived by his niece Cindy (Greg) Moss of Nampa and nephew Monty Ellis of Meridian, and his four great nieces Jennifer (Ben) Patchett of Nampa, Katie Vargas of Boise, Linsi Vargas of Boise, and Heidi Vargas of Boise, along with numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Bessie Ellis, his brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Garnet Ellis, and his niece Kim Ellis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel. Private Burial will follow at Cloverdale Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel. An online guest book is available at www.nampafuneralhome.com
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Roger's name to the American Cancer Society.

A smile as big as the world, the twinkle in his eyes, a heart of gold and the wit and sense of humor, oh how we shall miss you dear friend. Roger was by the house just last week as we were preparing to leave, we'd made plans to visit again on my return just before his much anticipated trip to Austria, he was so excited. Our shared interest of faceting a beautiful gemstone, and his stories of going to Tucson to find the perfect rough. Our late evening phone conversations, rock adventures and travel, even during the winter always having me look for a special piece for his display/collections while wandering the shows in Arizona. Roger was a very special friend to all who had the joy of meeting him. God bless dear friend, you will always remain in our hearts.

When I think of Roger, it is all good. He was the kind of man that made you feel good after talking with him. He was always very generous. Every year he would give me a call and tell me to come and get the grapes. I enjoyed wonderful juice from those grapes for many years. Words can't express how much he will be missed. I feel very fortunate for knowing Roger.

It saddens my heart to know I won't have "my boyfriend" to hug and hear his laugh. That man had the best smile, just like his dad. And the best open hand wave. Seeing him lean out the side of his truck while chattin with my pa. The Ellis's have been part of my entire childhood from stopping and getting tomatoes from the garden that beautiful garden, to Roger telling my dad I needed that calf for my FFA project. Life on the farm just won't me the same, just won't be the same.

Cindy and Monte,

I was so sad to see that Roger has passed away. Our prayers are with you and your families. I have so many fond memories of Roger talking about his trips or stories about how he bought his first car and always with his big smile and twinkling eyes. He was always patient with me while we worked on equipment in the shop, and when he was showing me how to setup the rock saws to help him cut slabs. I remember how he would head off to the sale pretty much every Saturday and later in the day call Ron or Harry and have us bring the truck in so we could haul his latest purchase home. It seems like every time we would get to the sale yard he would be there with "some old scab" as Ron would call them. Half the time we would wonder if the poor old cow would make it up the chute into the truck. We would get it home and Rog would doctor and feed it and the next thing you knew he was sending it off to the sale or the slaughter house and be getting a premium price out of it. He seem to have a knack for doing that and it was so impressive to see. He was such an amazing guy! He will truely be missed!

There are no words to express our sadness in the loss of a true friend. Mike and I always considered it an honor to have the whole Ellis family as neighbors and friends. With Roger being the last of the "clan" it was always a welcome site to see him pull into the driveway, especially in the summer months with his wonderful delivery of fresh tomatoes and other delicious vegetable's he had just picked from the garden! He never needed an excuse to stop and visit, he just always had to bring a little treat to his friends. I think the one thing I will miss most is hearing him whistle way off in the distance when he'd be setting the irrigation tubes in the ditch to water the hay field next to our house!! I know Mike will miss him in a million ways too. He would always say ( after a visit with Roger either at the sale barn, or just in the yard at the farm) "That Roger, he's such a nice guy " and then he relay to me the funny story "Rog" had told him that day. We were certainly bless to have know him and all of his family!! We are so sorry for your loss Cindy and Monty!
