Anne Laura Westerfield Career Navy officer with posts on aircraft carrier and at Pentagon, Parsippany HS grad Anne Laura Westerfield, Capt. U.S. Navy (Ret.), of Annandale, Va., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital after a brave 1-1/2 year journey with cancer. Visitation will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, Va., on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. A funeral service and interment will occur at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date. For a full obituary and updated Arlington National Cemetery information, please visit www.fmfh.com. Anne was born on Oct. 18, 1958, in Neptune, N.J., the eldest child of William and Ruth Westerfield. She attended Parsippany High School and received her bachelor's degree from Ball State University, after which she was commissioned as an officer in the Navy; she served until her retirement in 2010. Anne received her master's degree in command, control, communications and intelligence from the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. Highlights of her long military career include serving onboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, CV-64, as the combat systems officer and serving as the commander of the Joint Staff Support Center in the Pentagon. Upon her retirement, Anne was able to devote her time to charitable work and her love of quilting. She was the director of external relations for Homeward Deployed, a veterans support organization, and was the president of the Annandale Chapter of Quilters Unlimited, leading the members in performing charity work for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Fund and other organizations. Anne had the honor of meeting and speaking with the president of the United States in Washington, D.C., during a charity event. She was the beloved wife of Thomas M. Ward; daughter of Ruth P. and the late William G. Westerfield of Parsippany, N.J., and sister of Elaine Britcher of Morris Plains, N.J., and Chris and Patti Westerfield of Vermont. Anne was the daughter-in-law of Ingeborg Ward of Cream Ridge, N.J.; sister-in-law of Dieter and Lorraine Ward of New Egypt, N.J., as well as aunt of Sean and Caity Britcher and Brian and Kristen Ward. Anne remains in my life — with her photo on my dresser mirror, I see her each morning as I prepare for the day and she reminds me to be better. I miss you, Anne!
