Ed J. Wellenkamp, 92, Krakow, passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at New Haven Care Center.
Ed, son of the late Oscar Wellenkamp and wife Florence, nee Koehring, was born July 29, 1922, and grew up on the family farm in Krakow as one of seven children. He attained the rank of corporal in the U.S. Army, and served as a quad gunner on a half-track during World War II. He was part of the D-Day invasion and landed on Normandy, was in the Battle for Aachen, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and went through the Black Forest in Germany. After returning home, he was united in marriage to Leona M. Schaefer Oct. 25, 1947, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Dutzow. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking throughout his life. He loved his family and spending time with them, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ed is survived by his wife, Leona M. Wellenkamp, Krakow; four children, Beverly Miller, Washington, Wanda Randolph and husband Norm, Fenton, Jerry Wellenkamp and friend Debbie Lawrence, Idaho state, and Jim Wellenkamp and wife Linda, Krakow; one sister, Inez Rohrer, Washington; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Jenerra, Eddie, Michelle, Shari and Nicole; eight great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Florence Wellenkamp; and five siblings, George Wellenkamp, Henry Wellenkamp, Wilbert Wellenkamp, Adele Lottmann and Laura Mae Wellenkamp.
Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Miller Funeral Home, Washington.
A funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Krakow.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Memorial donations are appreciated to the New Haven Care Center.
