Cummings, Rena Louise
Lockwood: Age 81, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2014 at Riverview Manor, Owego NY from complications of COPD and dementia. Rena was born to Herman and Mildred Rifenburg Cary December 17, 1932 in Poughkeepsie NY. She married her one and only, Arthur Cummings, on December 27, 1952. They would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in December. Rena retired from Conrail after working over 30 years starting her railroad service with the Lehigh Valley, which later became Conrail. In that service, she made many long-time friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Herman and Mildred Cary and son-in-law Wayne Atkins. Rena is survived by husband, Arthur Sr, and son, Arthur Jr. at home; daughters, Susan (Tracy) Stroup of Sayre, Patricia Atkins of Clintondale NY, Jayne (Robert) Flick of Sayre, Beth Cummings of Elmira NY, and Danna Cummings of Willseyville NY. Her grandchildren, Jeffrey (Shannon) Stroup of Jenks OK, Matthew Stroup of Johnson City NY, Shaun Cummings of Willseyville NY, Brian Flick of Sayre, Ashley (Jon) Dolinich of Waverly NY, Amanda and Sarah Atkins of Clintondale NY and her "adopted" grandson, Kameron Hall. She is also survived by three great-grandsons, Timothy and Nathan Stroup and the family's newest addition, Blake Dolinich. She is also survived by brothers, Lewis (Toni) Cary of Lockwood, Leon (Harriet) Cary of Lockwood and sister Margaret (John) Knapich of West Wyoming PA. She has several nieces and nephews of whom she treated like her own children. Rena's pride and joy was her family. She was a staunch advocate for ARC clients, yet had a soft heart for the family cats, Larry and Moe. "What you see is what you get" was Rena. She never backed down from whatever was thrown her way. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember her with any of the following organizations: Chemung ARC, 711 Sullivan St., Elmira NY 14901; Lockwood Volunteer Fire Dept., PO BX 16, Lockwood NY 14859; and Riverview Manor, 510 Fifth Ave, Owego NY 13827. We, Rena's family, extend our heartfelt thanks to Riverview and the care they provided for our spouse and Mom. We were blessed with her wit and wisdom for six additional months upon her hospital discharge. For that, we will be eternally grateful. A time of gathering with family and friends will be from 1:00-2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, New York. The celebration of Rena's life will follow the visitation with Pastor Larry Day honoring her memory at 2:00 P.M. A special tribute to Rena's life will be presented on DVD during the funeral service.
