MEYERS
CECELIA BATTISTEL "CEL"
Passed away peacefully, in her Squirrel Hill home, on Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at the age of 96. Cel was born in Export, PA. Her mother died in the flu pandemic of 1918 when she was 3-1/2 months old. At that time, Cel was asked to be raised by her maternal family of Reynold and Anne Peduzzi of Trafford, PA. Cel eventually grew up with her four cousins, Carl, JoAnne "Sis", and the twins, Ron and Rey, who she helped raise. After graduating from Trafford High, Cel moved to Sq. Hill where she met and eventually married Irvin Meyers on November 30, 1941. Cel and Irv built their dream house in 1953 where she continued to live for 61 years. Cel was an avid gardner and was known for her Fire Bushes. Each Spring, people would stop by requesting seedlings which she happily provided. Over the years, Cel's Fire Bushes adorned numerous homes in Pittsburgh. Cel was most proud of her relationship with Carnegie Mellon University. For over 55 years, Cel rented a room to visiting post-docs and foreign exchange graduate students from all over the world. When the student arrived, Cel gave them a pushpin to place in a world map she kept in her hallway. The dozens of pins represented virtually every continent and numerous countries. Until the day she passed, Cel maintained close relationships with many of her international extended family. Cel is survived by her sons, Geoffrey (Carol Raimondi) of O'Hara Township and Ronny (Susan Herman) of Weston, FL; five grandchildren, Russell of Pittsburgh, Rebecca (Becky) Sonnenberg of Gibsonia, Richard (Andy) of Philadelphia, Jamie of San Jose, and Gregory of Hartford; and four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Lyla, Kaylee, and Kasey, who loved her very much. Cel also left numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may greet Cel's family at a Memorial Service held at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at 9:45 a.m. Following the service, interment will be in the Tree of Life Memorial Park in Franklin Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to "CAPH" The Center for Aging and Population Health at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health c/o Kristin W. de Paor, Director of Development, A631 Crabtree Hall, 130 DeSoto Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15261, 412-624-5639.

Thinking fondly of my wonderful memories with Cel and her family in the early 1970s. Love to you all

She was a good friend who made me laugh when ever we talked. I'm glad she was able to stay in her own home since she didn't like any of the assisted living places we visited. She was determined and always ended a conversation with "who loves you baby?" Here's looking at you kid!

Heartfelt condolences to Geoffrey, Carol, Ronnie and Susie, and to Cel's wonderful grandkids and their spouses and her beautiful great-grandkids.

To Cel in heaven: memories of your songs, laughs, family, enduring friendship and eggplant parmigiana will always make me smile, feel loved and grateful. All together now: "Sangia langia mangia pangia."

I had the privilege of staying in Cecelia's home last May, 2014. Although my stay was very short, she was already like my 2nd mom. I was new to Pittsburgh but she made my stay very comfortable and helped me in any way she could. I was in a home away from home.

I was always excited when I got home and find the delicious food she had left for me. I looked forward to Sunday breakfast and our little chats. I couldn't forget getting her favorite Lay's snick snacks and Lifesaver candies.

Cecelia's family is very lucky to have a mom and grandmother like her. My condolences to her family. My wife and I are praying for you and Cecelia. I know that she is enjoying her time in a better place now.
