JAMES McQUEEN Obituary

JAMES JOHN McQUEEN Died peacefully surrounded by his children at the age of 76 on Monday, December 8, 2014. Jim, like his mother Margaret, loved fiercely. Along with a love of sports, Jim's family was his greatest joy. He was a loyal and caring friend. The visitors during Jim's last days ensured they were as he lived: filled with music, humour, stories and the Fan 590. He will be missed by children Christopher, Jamie and his wife Michele and Lynn and her husband Peter. Also remembered by granddaughters Allison and Samantha. Jim was a proud teacher, Ontario labour movement activist, Life Member of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation and President of the Ontario Teachers' Federation among the many positions he held in his successful career. His presidency of District 12 (Toronto) was his favourite OSSTF job. Special thanks to Dr. Hope and Dr. Shepherd at Princess Margaret Hospital and all the palliative care doctors, nurses and caregivers who cared for Jim, most particularly at Bridgepoint Hospital. At Jim's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral. Instead, a celebration of his life will be held at a future date. In honour of Jim's life, please make a donation to the Kids Help Phone. Messages of condolence may be left at: www.heritagefuneralcentre.ca

Jim McQueen was an inspiration to many of us who worked in the local offices and classrooms of OSSTF. He embodied the best of our social justice instincts and animated within many of Ontario's classrooms teachers a more global vision for us as change agents within our communities and nation. He would also have stated this in simpler, more humble words! Bob Cottrell, past President of District 29 OSSTF

My sincere condolences to Mr McQueen's family...He was an amazing teacher. I was one of his students at Stephen Leacock and I remember his classes fondly.. Man in Society- mid 70's .. textbook was mostly newspaper articles. Question, review and form an opinion.
Thank you Mr McQueen.

When I quit school, Mr. McQueen took a special interest in my education, even offering to tutor me so I could get my diploma. In 1991, I went back to full time high school as a 31 year old. Mr. McQueen was an inspiration for me education wise.

Mr. McQueen taught a couple of my classes in the late 70's at Stephen Leacock. I can honestly say he was was of my best, and most memorable teachers. He was one of the 'cool' teachers that treated his students with respect....and had a great sense of humour! Always had fun in his class but he also opened our eyes to many world issues and he truly cared. Rest in peace, Mr. McQueen and know you made learning fun and interesting for many students.

Jim McQueen was "a take no guff sort of a guy". My memories of him were as an OSSTF Branch President in District 16 (then Scarborough) and recently District 12 (Toronto). Jim was an honourable man who never wavered in his support of the high school teachers in Toronto. As a President of District 12, Jim McQueen was a leader to be reckoned with in his dealings with the School Board. As a socialist and member of the NDP he was a powerful fighter for social democracy and the betterment of the world. I will miss him and always remember him as a most decent man. Condolences to his family and all his friends. "la lutte continue" ("the struggle continues").
