Barbara Funsch Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Barbara Ann O Neil Funsch died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at her home in Augusta, Ga. Beloved mother of Daniel (Anita), Neil, Matthew (Wendy), Judith Sly, and Barbara Martin (Bradley); loving grandmother of Benjamin, Elizabeth Hernandez (Oscar), Nicholas (Alice), Hannah and Robert (Johanna), Kate (Bob Ferara), Sarah, Alexander and Michael Funsch (deceased), Holly Funsch, Clinton III, Monica, George and Henry Sly, Annastasia and Emily Dascalos; loving great grandmother of Silas Funsch- Swords, Martha and Katie Funsch, Olivia and Sadie Funsch, Cole Lewis, Carter, Claire, and Anna Ferara and Clinton Sly IV. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty six years, Robert E. Funsch, MD and son in law, Michael C. Dascalos. Barbara was born on February 28, 1928 in Arlington, MA. She came to her husband s home town of St. Louis as a young wife where she and her husband made their home and raised a family. For fifty years she summered on Nantucket, MA initially with her parents and then with her husband and children. Following the death of her husband she moved to Augusta, Ga. to be near two of her sons and their families. She was always upbeat. Evan when she lost her eyesight, she never lost her curiosity and enthusiasm for life. She effortlessly combined grace and elegance with a zaniness and sincerity that touched everyone who knew her. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Forsyth at Asbury, University City on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday morning from 9-10 a.m. Private committal. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Louis Society of the Blind, 8770 Manchester Rd., St. Louis, MO 63144 or to the Crudem Foundation, P.O. Box 804, Ludlow, MA 01056. My deepest sympathy to the family. May the God of loyal love comfort the family during your time of sorrow. Psalms 119:76

Dan and Anita, please know that Terri and I have you in our hearts these days and weeks. Dan, your Mother was a woman with a sincere heart and eloquent grace. As I recall many sleep overs, Mrs. Funsch would make a cheesecake for dessert that was always welcomed and heavenly. This is just a small example how special she made everyone feel. I never forgot. We are comforted today knowing that she earned her heavenly reward and now enjoys the warm embrace of her husband and her Savior.

It was an amazing pleasure to meet Ms. Funsch during our visit to Augusta in September. I was in awe of her beauty both physically and mentally. What an inspiration!
