Raymond Barend Obituary

Raymond Bernard Barend BRISTOL/CANANDAIGUA - Ray went to be with the Lord after a brave battle with melanoma and a very courageous and valiant battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on Dec. 12, 2014, surrounded by family at the age of 78. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Elane Steidle "Fluffie" Barend; son, Raymond J.; and parents, Bernard and Rose Barend. He will be sadly missed by his children, Linda Barend, Penny (Tim) Hensler and Heidi (Skip) Guerrie; and 73 foster children. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Steven, Jason, Alyssa, RaeLyn, Bryce, Noelle, Brynne, Clarissa, Sabryna and Owen; and three great-grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by his brother, Harold (Dorothy) Barend; sister, Alberta Austin; sister-in-law, Patty Steidle who was very helpful in his later years; sisters and brothers-in-law; and many dear nieces, nephews and devoted dear friends. Raymond, a Christmas baby, lived a very full life. He and Fluffie were married on April 16, 1955. He worked for E. J. Dupont Company before starting a career as a Rochester firefighter. Being a firefighter was Ray's dream job, but early in his career he received a serious fire fighting injury and was assigned to the fire alarm office. It was here that Ray would become best known and make the most impact in the fire service by becoming an emergency communications instructor for Monroe County's 39 fire districts. During the evolution of the Office of Emergency Communications (911 Center) Ray developed and trained all the new Fire and EMS dispatchers who would be needed before turning on the 911 system. Ray loved his time working with his family of firefighters. After retiring from the Rochester Fire Department, Ray became the Bristol town supervisor and later became chairman of the board of supervisors for Ontario County. Ray was an active member of the Bristol Fire Department, East Rochester Fire Department's Exempt Club and was an honorary life member of the Lake-shore Fire District. He was also a member of the Bristol Historical Society. Ray spent his life serving people. His favorite quote was, "The power of the people, we did it together and we did it our way!" Ray will be remembered as being a very caring, honest, hardworking, funny, courageous and strong person. Ray always fought for what he thought was right and fair. Friends may call on Friday, December 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Fuller Funeral Home Inc., 190 Buffalo St., Canandaigua. Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass on Saturday, December 20, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Canandaigua. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bristol Library, 6750 County Road 32, Canandaigua, NY 14424; or Levi Corser Memorial Park, c/o Bristol Town Hall, 6740 County Road 32, Canandaigua, NY 14424. Memories and Condolences
for Raymond Barend

Not sure what to say?

To all the Barends
My deepest condolences on Ray's passing. Ray was a man of quality; Quality of his work, quality of his public service, but most of all the quality of his family. I think fondly of the many times Ray and Fluffy invited me into their home for supper with their family. Bristol and Ontario County are better places because of his selfless contributions. God be with you all. Thank you Ray.

Ray and Elane bought that big ole 17 room Bristol house from my parents around 1970. They would continue, as my parents had, raising foster children in that home. If only those walls could speak, what loving and nurturing stories they could tell. Little did I know I would get to know Ray as Town Supervisor, member of the Ontario County Public Safety Committee and eventualy the Chairman of the Board. I, as a deputy sheriff witnessed first hand his commitment to public safety. He came to my retirement party two years ago carrying his oxygen bottle. He gave me photos of that ole Bristol house and told me how proud he was of my
career. He left me with words that I will never forget. That was Ray, sincere and genuine both personally and professionally. Rest in peace Ray. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Don DeSmith, Canandaigua, NY

To the Barend family,
My sincere sympathy to you at this difficult time. The passing of Ray Barend closes the book on a life of fire department and community service in Monroe and Ontario Counties that will live on forever.
I remember Ray coming to our North Greece FD with his communications training package back in the 1970's. Only he with his expertise and humor could do justice to the topic. He became a favorite son of North Greece FD and served as annual banquet emcee numerous times, always a hoot.
He was admired by everyone that met him.
I shall always recall his bright dedication to his job at Fire Alarm, often signing off with his trademark transmission, "KEB-243 in the Flower City, Rochester, New York."
Rest easy dear friend.

Ray and I came on the Rochester Fire Department in 1962 along with 12 others. To say we had a ball would be putting it mildly and you can bet that Ray was in the forefront of most of the pranks we pulled on each other. After graduation Ray and I would often see each other on the job. He had a heart of gold and truly cared about his Brother and Sister Firefighters.I will miss our bantering; I will miss our E-Mail exchanges; I will truly miss him. May Ray rest in God's love.

I met Ray in 1972 when he came to the Fire Academy to talk to us recruits. I would run into him from time to time at the fire dispatchers office across from headquarters where I was assigned. He always had time to listen to you, I last saw Ray last year in Bristol when I drove Bob Grahms fire truck down there. Ray will be missed.

RIP brother. You brought a lot of laughter/humor to many young fire fighters like myself by sharing some of the infamous calls you handled on Cumberland St. I don't think it was any secret that students in the "EF" classes looked forward to your class as the favorite [and most interesting] of them all. BTW I'm sure you'll be happy to know that there beyond "micro-phish" in heaven [LOL]. God bless you brother and thanks for sharing a part of your life.
