Mr. Cole was born at Miami, Oklahoma to William A. and Grace (Givens) Cole on April 9, 1919. He came with his family as a child to rural Osage County west of Bartlesville and they later moved to the Hogshooter area in Washington County where they were active in farming, cattle ranching, dairy farming and raising hogs. Mr. Cole was married to Bernice Jayne Jackson on September 20, 1943 in Bartlesville. They made their home in the Bartlesville area and continued farming, ranching, raising hogs and watermelons. They also owned and operated the Cole Grocery at Glen Oak until 1970. Mr. Cole was also employed with Brown Plumbing for a number of years until his retirement in 1994. He was involved in local construction projects such as the Phillips office building in downtown Bartlesville, the Sooner Park Band Shelter and with his father graded Highway 60. He had seen many things over his life time including covered wagons, the first automobiles and all of today's modern conveniences. Mr. Cole became a member of the New Harmony Baptist Church in 1952 and was a current member of the Oglesby Assembly of God. He loved his Lord and began and ended each day with prayer as well as with every mealtime. His handshake was his word. Mrs. Cole preceded him in death on August 4, 2011.
Mr. Cole is survived by two daughters, Colleen Maye Dinger of DeQueen, Arkansas, and Judy Raye Topping and husband Larry of Bartlesville, one brother, Glen Cole of Nowata, 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 8 step great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren and his cat, Tabby. I remember their store as a little girl and Mr. Cole's watermelons were a July 4th tradition in my family. Wow, that man could garden.
