On January 11, 2015, Barbara Elizabeth Butera of Arlington and Tom's Brook, VA passed away peacefully at home after a long illness.
Barbara was a devoted mother, an "extreme" gardener, a talented homemaker, a lover of books, music and art.
She was born to Elizabeth and Joseph Banisch on Dec. 21, 1931 in New Jersey and grew up in Ashland, VA.
She earned her BA in Psychology from Seton Hill College, class of 1952. She married Charles W. Butera of Brooklyn, NY in 1955 and the two moved to Northern Virginia to raise their family.
She poured her abundant talent and energy into her home and family, which grew to include three sons and three daughters. In later years, she worked as a legal secretary at the Smithsonian Institutionás Wilson Center, Covington & Burling, and other Washington DC area law firms. She inspired us all with her intelligence, determination, responsibility, humility and patience.
Barbara's passing is mourned by her six children and their spouses and four grandchildren, William and Loni Butera and daughters Lara & Jana of Boston, MA; Frances Butera and Oren Schlieman and daughter Lily Schlieman of Honolulu, HI; Laura Butera of Manassas, VA; Joseph Butera of Tom's Brook, VA; Edward Butera of Arlington, VA; and Vivian (Butera) and Bob Gleason and son Charles Gleason of Leesburg, VA; as well as her sister, Patricia Blecich of Meriden, CT and many extended family members and friends.
The family will hold a Funeral Mass on Friday Jan. 16, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Woodstock, VA.

my condolences go out to the Butera family, especially Laura & Fran who I spent some of my childhood with at St. James and O'Connell. Your mom was a kind and gentle soul. She was always so friendly and welcoming. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
