RIO HONDO, TX. -
Keevin Keane Strohmeyer of Rio Hondo, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 17, 2015, surrounded by loving family. He was born in McAllen, Texas on April 6, 1945. He was the youngest of 9 children, born to Elizabeth and George Strohmeyer.
He proved his strength early in childhood when he lost his mother in a car accident, along with one of his lungs. Shortly after, he contracted polio. Despite his early challenges, he proved to be an exceptional athlete, excelling in football, baseball, diving, and swimming. He graduated from McHigh in 1965. His love of football and baseball continued, as he enjoyed watching the Longhorns and The Fighting Irish whenever he could.
After a career in sales and management in College Station, Texas, he returned to the Valley, where he married the love of his life, Betty Vanderpool in 1987. Together, they opened Brake Masters in McAllen the same year. After 17 years of business, they moved the business to Harlingen and made their home Rio Hondo, Texas. AutoMasters opened its doors in Harlingen in 2007 and is still thriving today. Keevin loved his business and spent hours visiting his customers, many of whom became dear friends. He worked up until his very last days.
Keevin was a happy man who loved people and loved life. Some of the most important highlights he'd want us to share are as follows:
The natural world was ever his delight and sanctuary. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. More recently, he could be found in his woodshop, building gifts for his family. He loved his dogs and treated them as family. Many of them were given a loving home after he picked them up along rural roads. He had a great sense of humor and loved jokes, especially his own corny ones. He was also an avid reader and always had a good novel in-flight - usually Louis L'Amour.
Above all, Keevin's greatest love was that of his wife and family. Together, they had 7 children and many grandchildren, all of whom he adored. He was kind, understanding, patient and loved his family unconditionally. His family loved him unconditionally, as well and was so very proud of him. He will be sorely missed.
Visitation hours will be held on Friday, January 23, 12:00 pm - 8:00pm with the family present from 6:00pm -8:00pm at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 710 Ed Carey Drive, Harlingen, Texas, 78550.
Keevin will have a private burial at the Rio Hondo Cemetery the morning of Saturday, January 24. After, there will be a celebration of Keevin's life at 11:00am St. Paul Lutheran Church, 602 Morgan Blvd in Harlingen, Texas with a reception at the church immediately following the service. All who knew and loved Keevin will be warmly welcomed.

Keevin and I were like brother and sister at McHi. My mother and I welcomed him in our home a lot! And later, his family lived right behind my parents' home. I have the most precious memories of those times and my heart goes out to all friends and family! Linda Taub Martin

We would see Uncle Keevin sometimes when Grandpa would come out to California every year to visit. He was always the nicest guy! I remember he gave me a fishing reel that I admired.

Remembering my Uncle Keevin brings only smiles. When I visited McAllen as a young girl, Uncle Keevin took me dove hunting along the canal near the house. He even let me fetch the doves. Always with a smile.

GOD BLESS THE STROHMEYER FAMILIES during this trying time. Mr. Strohmeyer was a wonderful customer of ours. He was the most nicest person that we knew. We often wondered where He moved to after His shop closed. Dan's Wrecker Service of McAllen will be forever grateful to him. GOD BLESS MR. STROHMEYER'S soul.
