Sister Mary Bernadette Dolchak, SS.C.M., 92, died at Emmanuel Center, Danville, on Feb. 9, 2015. The daughter of Andrew and Mary (Mikita) Dolchak, she was born in Swoyersville, Pa., on Nov. 7, 1922.
She attended Holy Trinity School and Swoyersville High School.
On Feb. 10, 1940, Sister entered the novitiate in Danville and became a novice on Aug. 13, 1940, when she received the name Sister Elfreda. Later, she returned to her baptismal name. The date of her first profession of vows was Aug. 17, 1942, and final profession occurred on Aug. 15, 1948.
She served the needs of the Sisters in a number of convents in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and New York. For two years at Sacred Heart Parish in Wilkes-Barre, she was a parish visitor. Her primary ministry was health care of the elderly in St. Cyril's, Highland Park, Ill.; St. Benedict's, Niles, Ill.; and Maria Joseph Manor, Danville.
Sister was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph and George; and sisters, Helen and Bernadette; as well as her first cousin, Sister Maureen Chorba, SS.C.M.
Sister Mary Bernadette is survived by two nieces, Sara Ann Greco, Wilkes-Barre; and Annette Miller, Vestal, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Beatrice Dolchak, Laflin.
A wake service will take place today at the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Sister's own feast day, at 10 a.m. at Maria Hall. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. with Father Fidelis Umukoro, O.P., as the main celebrant. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Brady Funeral Home of Danville.
