Dr. G. William Davis
Nashville, TN
Born: April 13, 1932, Tupelo, MS
Died: March 11, 2015, Nashville, TN
He was born to Veneda Shands Davis and George William Davis. Veneda Davis was a gifted organist and played organ at Calvary Baptist Church in Tupelo for over 40 years. William Davis was a Professor of Chemistry in the Mississippi Community College system.
In high school, Bill Davis was a gifted musician and student. He was the President of the Tupelo High School Band, where he played first chair first clarinet. He also played for two years on the Blue Mountain College for Women Symphony Orchestra, Blue Mountain College being his mom's alma mater.
In 1950, Bill won an academic scholarship to Vanderbilt University. At Vanderbilt, he met his future wife, Jean Marie Smith, who predeceased him in 2010. From Vanderbilt, Bill attended and graduated from Emory Medical School in Atlanta, GA, followed by Orthopedic training at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Bill founded the Nashville Orthopedic Clinic in 1967 with Dr. John R. Jones and was joined by Dr. Charles G. Norton and Dr. John C. Brothers as the mainstays of the NOC for the next 30 years. During this time, Bill served as the MBA team doctor for four years.
During his career, Bill Davis traveled extensively, holding seminars sponsored the University of California at San Francisco. These seminars were held once per month in San Francisco as well as in various cities in Europe, Asia and Australia over a period of 15 years. The seminars were done in association with three UCSF physicians and focused on lumbar spine surgery. Bill also introduced the first minimally invasive surgery for herniated discs.
In 1971, Bill was selected by the US Food and Drug Administration to perform the first hip replacements in Tennessee. Bill was one of two physicians in Tennessee chosen for this honor, and they carefully evaluated joint replacement results for five years before the surgical procedures were made publicly available to all orthopedic surgeons. Bill held memberships in multiple orthopedic and spine surgery societies.
Bill was a founding member of Christ Presbyterian Church, which remained a focal point of his life since then. Bill taught fifth-grade Sunday School for a few years and remained a dedicated member of the Choir at Christ Presbyterian Church.
Bill is survived by two children, Bing Davis (Stacy) and Gina Turman, and 5 grandchildren, Will, Logan (Marley) and Kate Davis, and Allie and Lilly Turman.
In February of 2012, Bill married Margie Gowens Hutchison, and she has been the joy of his life since then.
Visitation will be at Christ Presbyterian Church Sanctuary from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Friday, with a memorial service to follow at 12:30 p.m.

In loving memory of a sweet, wonderful, joyful, Christian Man. How wonderful that he took the time as a physician to learn everyone's name including the staff in housekeeping. He is singing with the ANGELS!!!!
