Martha Fay Griffis Perkins passed away after a brief illness on May 2, 2015 in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 86. She was the last of eight children born to Clara (Cork) and John Griffis of Pratt City, Alabama.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by four brothers, Lawrence, John (J.W), Dayton, and Louis Griffis; and three sisters, May Nolan, Lillian Lehman, and Thelma (Toots) Merkl.
Martha will be missed by her adoring husband of 62 years, Richard Gray Perkins. Her memory will be lovingly cherished by her children, Cheryl Perkins Floyd (William) and Richard Scott Perkins (Jeanne); her brother-in-law, C. H. Merkl, Jr. (Bud); sister-in-law, Helen Griffis; six grandchildren, Brian Floyd (Shelly), Bethany Floyd, Allen Perkins, Daniel Perkins, Anna Perkins, and Kate Perkins; as well as two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Landry Forrest. Martha was loved and respected by a host of nieces and nephews and their families, who affectionately called her “Mot.”
Martha was a longtime member of Central Park Baptist Church before joining Meadowbrook Baptist Church, where her favorite responsibility was that of “greeter.” She was also a member of the Après Study Club and will be fondly remembered for her hospitality, trademark sense of humor, and her beautiful blue eyes. She was a loyal friend to many and will be missed by those who had the privilege to know and love her.
The family will receive friends at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124, on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The funeral service will be at 12 noon on Tuesday in Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel, and burial will follow in Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Martha’s memory to Meadowbrook Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama.
