STEVEN FRANCIS FLYNN
NOVEMBER 2, 1956 - MAY 13, 2015
Steven Francis Flynn, born on November 2, 1956 in New Haven, Connecticut, passed away May 13, 2015 at the age of 58 after a very short battle with cancer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle; and cherished spending time with his family. Steve was a friend to many and had a unique way of making people laugh.
He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BS in finance and earned an MBA from Golden State University. Steve's love of airplanes and flying was what led him to a 22 year career as an Instructor-Navigator in the US Air Force. He retired as a Lt. Colonel, and over the last four years shared his knowledge, expertise, and passion as a Jr. ROTC instructor at Cathedral City High School. Steve has been an active member of his community and church. Through the years, he belonged to Knights of Colombus-4th Degree, Kiwanis, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and VFW. He was also an avid runner and baseball fan (Go Red Sox!).
Steve is survived by his wife Marianne Flynn, two daughters Jennifer Flynn and Rachel McGovran, two sons Steven Flynn and Daniel Flynn, his parents David and Agnes Flynn, and his two brothers William Flynn and John Flynn. He also had five adoring grandchildren, Gracie and Roger Flynn, Rush, Jack, and Harley McGovran, as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Rosary and visitation will be held Sunday May 17th at 6pm with a funeral mass Monday May 18th at 10am; both at St. Anthony Church, 1801 Winton Way, Atwater. Graveside services will follow at Turlock Memorial Cemetery. Any contributions/donations can be made to St. Anthony School, as per Steve's wishes. Arrangements Entrusted To Wilson Family Funeral Chapel of Atwater.

Steve was a good friend with a big heart. We were blessed to work with him for many years with the Tour de Palm Springs and the Patriot Ride For Our Heroes charity cycling events. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Marianne and the rest of the Flynn family on both coasts. My brother Ted and I grew up with the Flynn boys in Hamden, CT. We lived maybe 10 houses away around the corner. We did a LOT togther. We played, played, played. Old fashioned play. Just showed up at each other's houses and played. Steve and I caddied at the New Haven Country Club. We played golf there on caddie's day (just like on Caddy Shack). I snuck him into the Whitney Theater where I worked as an usher. We carpooled to school together at Hamden High. We shared a common heritage with his parents, and my grandparents, coming from the ol' country. We lost touch after high school and Steve did reach out when you guys moved to CA but unfortunately I let my busy life get in the way of old friendships. I regret that now. It was very good to see him at my brother's wake 15 months ago. We had a nice chat. I am saddened by his untimely departure. I am sad for you all. His and my relationship was all that was good about growing up in the 'burbs in the 60s/70s. Just kids being kids without structure ... with reasonable freedom and boundaries. With space to play in and enough safety to protect us. We all slept well those nights after playing all day. I never lost my love of play ... with my kids and with whomever I can get to play with me ... still. Steve was part of a great thing we had back then and for that I'm very grateful. You were blessed.

Marianne and family, Steve will be greatly missed! I knew Steve from Castle, and then we worked together at the 108 ARW for years. Steve was a great asset to the wing in the turbulent months after 9/11, often working round the clock to support the unit mobilization. I'll remember his ready laugh and friendship!

I served with Steve at Castle in the late 80's. I remember once I mentioned I was going back to see family in CT and he asked me to bring him back some potato chips (Cain's I think). He said he couldn't find them anywhere out west. He will be missed by all.
