SOBEL, ROBERT J. Robert J. Sobel, age 58, of Branford, died peacefully and unexpectedly at his home and entered into eternal life on May 12th, 2015. Robert “Bob” grew up in Wallingford, CT, the son of the late Louis J. Sobel and the late Elda B. Killam. He is survived by his siblings: Carolyn J. Malchodi of Mashpee, MA; David A. Sobel of San Antonio, TX; Hildy M. Caffrey of Branford; and Nancy Jo Rios of Meriden; along with several nieces and nephews. Robert recently retired from MetroNorth Railroad where he served as a Conductor for 30 years. While the railroad was his job, his passions in life included gardening, his beloved Sunset Beach, reading an array of diverse literature, yoga and meditation in great admiration of the Dali Lama, bicycling, hiking and spending time in the quiet solitude of the Blackstone Library. Robert had a deep connection to the quality of his friendships -- his generosity in a giving spirit of his time and attention to helping those in need, from donations and gifts to children in financial need – to assisting neighbors, friends and the many people he met along the way through his MetroNorth railroad journeys. We would like all who knew Robert to fill this sad void by peace and reflection – this will honor Robert to be remembered for the positive impact he imparted upon so many lives. Please think of “Bob” when the first buds of spring arrive and remembrances of his spontaneous acts of kindness. In lieu of a service, our family requests that memorial contributions/donations to honor the spirit and memory of Robert Sobel be directed to the Branford Counseling Center, 342 Harbor Street, Branford, CT 06405. Executive Director, Peter Cimino, will diligently oversee that donations will be used solely for the programs designed for children in financial need, including educational programs, summer camp, Secret Santa, as well as several other established child assistance programs at Branford Counseling Center. Our family thanks you in advance for your kind generosity which lovingly reflects our brother’s life, memory and legacy. For online memorial see www.wsclancy.com

American novelist Chuck Palahniuk once said, "We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will".
People cope with the loss of a loved one in many different ways. Personally, I choose the path of remembrance. I choose to celebrate all the memories I have of Uncle Bobby for those are what he created that will live forever...
From candid photo shoots down by the pond...to numerous hiking/mountain biking excursions...to that time Bobby and I decided to rock matching "Canadian Tuxedos"...all of which barely scratch the surface in terms of the everlasting memories will always share of Bobby.
I focus on the joy Bobby brought to my family on countless occasions and my hopes are that he is truly at peace. I have no doubt he's lounging in an adirondack chair, Sandy by his side, watching the sun set over blue waters.
Your nephew,

Rob, it is with a great deal of sorrow that I must accept your passing when you still had so much work remaining on Earth. I am left to grieve for your kind, generous, giving soul. I have reflected publicly as well as privately on the many occasions that we shared such hearty laughs that they led to us wiping tears from our eyes that they produced. The times that I had the good fortune to bank in my memories will live forever. I can't fathom that you are truly gone, but I am certain that you are tending to your heavenly garden with your faithful pup Sandy lying comfortably by your side. I wish you peace and serenity in your new home., I find great solace knowing that I will join you one day in your garden. We have a lot of catching up to do. RIP my brother.
