Stan Grover
1947 - 2015
WEST GARDINER - Stan Grover, 68, of West Gardiner, died at 1 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, surrounded by his wife, daughter, and son-in-law. Born in Portland on May 18, 1947, he was the son of Stanley R. Grover and Lillian (Liberty) Grover Robinson. A native of South Paris, he graduated from Oxford Hills High School in 1965.
Stan graduated from UMO in 1969 with a BS in wildlife management and a minor in forestry. After college, he volunteered for the Army OCS where he was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas.
Returning to Maine, he began working as a lineman for Central Maine Power and he was proud to be the 3rd generation of the Grover family to be employed there. He became manager of Transmission Maintenance Planning and served in this role until his retirement in 2010.
Stan was a competitive man who had many interests during his lifetime. He was an outstanding football player in high school and competed at UMO until an injury sidelined him. He learned carpentry from an early age with his own father and after high school graduation; he built an entire home with his father and brother in a summer. As much as he loved building with his own hands, hunting was his true lifelong passion. For more than 40 years, he spent a week each fall with several of his college friends deer hunting at the same camp they roomed in years before. Once his grandson, Noah, reached the magical age of 10, Stan spent the remainder of every fall chasing deer, turkeys, ducks, and geese in Searsmont with the Robbins clan. After 33 years of waiting, he was thrilled to finally receive a moose permit in 2014 and was even more elated to land an 820 pound bull. Stan's competitive nature didn't end out in the woods - every spring he worked feverishly in his garden to ensure that his peas would be ready before Jim Robbins Sr.'s were.
Stan's favorite times were spent celebrating any occasion with his many close friends. He loved hosting parties, especially Thanksgiving with his extended family. He was happiest spending time with those he loved and creating happy memories and new traditions. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his father, Stanley R. Grover in 1991. Surviving him are his wife of 23 years, Marci Grover; his mother, Lillian Robinson of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; his daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Jim Robbins of Searsmont and their five children, Noah, Mary, Erin, Adelle, and Julia; his brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Cindy Grover of South Hadley, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be July 16, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, where a celebration of his life will be held on Friday, July 17, at 12:30 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Immediately after there will be a reception at Maple Hill Farm Inn, 11 Inn Rd., Hallowell.

Marci, our deepest sympathy to you and your family. I have many fond memories of working with Stan. He taught me a lot and was one of only a few managers who took the time to thank me for my work with a card and personalized handwritten note (that I still have after all these years). May all your happy memories and these heartfelt notes help you through this most difficult time.

Marci, I worked closely with Stan as Transmission Planning and Transmission Maintenance shared many common goas. I was very pleased when Stan asked me to work with him to perform Storm Assessor training in the summer of 1998, just before the famous Ice Storm. I ran into him many times at Fraternity Village in Searsmont on trips to my farm in Lincolnville. He was truly a man who could get things done. I respected his knowledge of the system and am proud to have known him as a friend. God bless you and the family in the next few weeks as you gain strength to deal with such a huge loss.

Marci and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed seeing and chatting with Stan in the CMP hallways. He was a very kind man. I will never forget the day that he called me to tell me that I could ride with him in the helicopter over the power lines after a major lightning storm. That was such a wonderful day spent with him. I'm thankful to have known Stan. Marci my heart goes out to you, you are in my prayers. BIG HUG
