Peter Harold Cribb February 6, 1931 - June 19, 2015
It is with sadness that A. Marigold Cribb announces the passing of Peter Harold Cribb, BSc MRCVS DACVA (emeritus) on June 19, 2015. Peter is survived by Marigold, his wife of 59 years; daughter Fiona (John) and grandchildren Anna and Finn; son Alastair (Georgie) and grandchildren Evan (Vicki) and Emily; and daughter Alina (Tony). Born in London, England, Peter trained as a veterinarian at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh, where he met and, in 1956, married Marigold. In 1962, the adventurous couple, with two children in tow, immigrated to Canada where they established the first veterinary practice in Fort St. John, serving all BC north of the Peace River. They moved to Saskatoon in 1967 so Peter could take up a position at the newly established Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Peter established himself as a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist and advocate for animal welfare. He spent the next 28 years teaching and 45 years later, his students still talk about him. An environmentalist at heart, he fought to protect the Churchill River System and was an early adopter of energy conservation, designing and building his own solar house in the late seventies. Truly appreciative of all that Canada has to offer, Peter was an avid canoeist, a political activist, an animal lover, a photographer, a part-time farmer, an outdoorsman, a world traveller, and a great husband, father and grandfather. Peter supported his wife, children and grandchildren in all their varied endeavours. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 29th at 1:30 pm at McClure United Church, 4025 Taylor St E, Saskatoon, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or to the P.H. Cribb Scholarship in Veterinary Medicine (cheques to University of Calgary, attn. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, 3280 Hospital Dr NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4Z6)

Marigold and family,
I wanted to express my sadness at Peter's death, even though my message is very belated. Although it is forty years since I spent time with your wonderful family, I still think of those times in Cambridge with great affection. It is a pity that I was too young to appreciate the full richness of Peter's character.

Dear Marigold, Fiona, Alina, Alastair and family.
We were very saddened to hear of Peter's passing. Jane and I remember Peter and your family with the greatest affection from our time in Saskatoon whilst at WCVM in the late '70s. I worked as a surgery resident and hence spent a lot of time with Peter and remember him as a veterinarian/professor with a true sense of commitment to teaching and the welfare of all who worked with him . He was always one who championed the cause for common sense!
We remember helping build your house and will never forget the hospitality you showed to us when we arrived from Australia with a little newborn in tow. Peter was instrumental in showing us the ropes in the Saskatchewan outdoors so that we not only had a great time, skiing and canoeing but also survived a few winters. Over the years we have been lucky enough to see you and Peter in Sydney a number of times and we always looked forward to spending time with you . Jane and I will always remember Peter as a great veterinarian , a true humanitarian , a nature lover and wonderful family man.
Our thoughts are with you all.

Marigold, I will miss the four of us having "lunches" together. My forever memory of Peter will be when I first talked to him alone. He told me how to deliver a calf. Whether I understood or not is inconsequential, what was important was that he looked me right in the eye, smiled and told me that he knew that I could do it.

Dear Marigold and family,
I first met Peter as an intern at the U of S in 1979-80. I had the good fortune to be invited to your home for a get together to meet you as well. We have great memories of Peter as a caring anesthesiologist and mentor to faculty and students at the U of S. We mourn his passing with you and offer our deepest sympathies. Joanne and Klaas

Dear Marigold and Family,
I got to know Peter through our mutual involvement with the Saskatoon Zoo Society. Peter was a big part of the Society's early development. I enjoyed his sense of humour, his intelligence and his warmth and compassion. One memory that always brings a smile to my face is the night he hosted a Society board meeting at your home on Winmill Road. Peter chuckled at our surprise as the goats ambled up and settled on the deck outside the living room window to enjoy the evening sun (and possibly the wonderful prairie view).
He was a wonderful human being and will be missed.

Peter was bright light in what I like to believe was the golden age of veterinary medicine. His abilities in veterinary anaesthesia, as a teacher, and most importantly as a warm, giving human being will be remembered by all his students and colleagues including me.
Thank you Peter. Kim L Ward.

To the Cribb Family: It was with great sadness that I noted the passing of Dr. Peter Cribb. Dr. Cribb was one of my teachers when I attended the WCVM (graduating class of 1976), and it was my interaction with Dr. Cribb that inspired me in later years to go on and study Veterinary Anesthesia and Critical Care at UCDavis, and ultimately to become a diplomate in the ACVAA. I am truly sorry for your loss. Dr. Cribb was a great teacher and a credit to his profession and specialty. He will be missed by his colleagues and the other members of the ACVAA.

Marigold,Fiona, Alastair and Emily:
It was only a few days ago that I saw Alastair for a moment at a banquet. We agreed to meet later but that did not happen.
It was my intention to update our respective paths, and in so doing , catch up on 'the parents'.
As a result, the news to-day is a bit of a shock!
Having been close colleagues at the WCVM, we have tried to keep up with the faculty of by-gone days but did lose track of you for some time now!
Jean and I send our condolences, Marigold, and trust that you will find comfort and support from your family; in that we have no doubts!
You are in our thoughts and pray that you will find 'peace'.
Jean and Gavin..

To Alastair and family, I am sadden by the news of your loss. I not only found your father one of the most inspirationally intellectual professors at WCVM but, something about that dry humour and devilish grin made the task of learning the art of anaesthesiology enjoyable not to mention instilling knowledge that has lasted me throughout my career.

Marigold, Fiona, Alastair and Emily:
It is with sincere sympathy that Jean and I offer condolences on the passing of your husband and father!
It is only a few days ago that, in a brief moment at a banquet, we saw Alastair and planned to visit later in the evening. The crowd dispersed after the event and we did not resume our conversation. I enquired of other guests but did not discover the state of Peter's health at that time.
I can say that he and I shared many hours together in the surgeries at the College over many years before I left the Clinics for the Dean's office.I found him to be dedicated to his chosen career in the study and practice of anesthesiology and he kept abreast of the current knowledge in his chosen discipline.
Jean and I lost track of him and Marigold since we left Saskatoon some 23 years ago, never-the-less, his departure gives us cause to share your loss and celebrate his memory!
It is our prayer that Marigold ,and her extended family, will find strength and comfort in the knowledge that he is 'at peace'.
Gavin and Jean Hamilton.

I knew Peter as the father of my best childhood friend, Fiona, and later as one of my professors and colleagues at WCVM. A few favourite memories: Peter neutering our cat Chester on top of the washing machine in their basement my first taste of veterinary medicine! Peter taking Fiona, Penny (a high school friend) and me on my first overnight canoe trip down the South Saskatchewan River; Fiona, Penny and I sneaking off to skinny dip while Peter tended the campfire. Peter generously organizing a 4 day trip to the continent for Fiona and me when I visited them in Cambridge when Peter was on sabbatical. And in vet school, Peter writing BOOM!! in the margins of my first anesthesia exam, when I guessed once a year to his question How often do you grease an anesthetic machine? - a trick question, I think! I have many other fond memories of Peter - his love of animals and the outdoors, his smart-alecky sense of humour, his natural decorum, which he instilled in his children. I feel very fortunate for having known him. My heartfelt sympathy to Marigold, Fiona, Alastair, and Alina.
