Johnny Godfrey Obituary

Johnny Heyward Godfrey Jr., 77, of Gainesville passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2015, at Hope Memory Care and Assistant Living following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Maxey Ladd will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Godfrey was born on Sept. 13, 1937, in Gainesville to the late Johnny Heyward Sr. and Belle Oshields Godfrey. He was retired and a member of Pine Crest Baptist Church. He also served with the U.S. Navy for six years as a hurricane hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Nadine Godfrey.

Mr. Godfrey is survived by his daughter, Sharon Godfrey Clyde of Flowery Branch; son, Martin B. Godfrey Sr. of Flowery Branch; grandchildren, Kevin, Darien and Joshua Clyde, Martin B. Godfrey Jr., and Angel Courtney Godfrey; great-grandson, Nikolai Clyde; brother, Myles (Jean) Godfrey of Winder; sister, Malinda (Terry) Marshall of Elkhart, Texas; nieces, Kirsten Parten, Amy Jones and Isabel Godfrey; nephew, Charley Kennedy; and his very special friend, Bettie Godfrey.

We are so sorry for your loss. I knew Johnny all of our lives. He followed me into the Navy. We shared a love of airplanes. The last time I saw him was at the Gainesville airport. I have good memories of him.
