WEST--Bernard.
November 16, 1931 - July 28, 2015. It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of an amazing man. Bernard, beloved husband of Joyce Loewenthal West, adoring father of Jane West and Stacy West Clark, grandfather to Sara Lindsay Clark, Molly Addison Clark and Benjamin Luka Schmitt-West, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 28. He was a man of immeasurable generosity who doted on his family and friends with joy, love, birthday cards, gifts, visits and his time. Born in New York City to Lillian West and Milton West, Bernard was a brilliant thinker who adored reading books, watching classic movies from the 1930s and 1940s, skiing, golf and most of all his treasured NYC where he resided for over 50 years. A lover of all things NYC and Colorado and his wonderful house in Westchester, he loved and was a regular at the Ballet, NYC Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, the NYC theatre scene and events in Beaver Creek CO. He was a member of Quaker Ridge Golf Club, The University Club, The Harmonie Club, The Cornell Club and The Beaver Creek Club. One of his greatest loves was Cornell University from which he obtained his undergraduate (1955) and law degrees (1955) and volunteered for numerous alumni activities over the years. A second love was American History. He was a brainiac about the Civil War and World War II and his second calling was to be a history teacher. He was a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and was deliriously happy whenever he was in a plane or flying one. Another of his loves was driving and he was darn great at it at 83! He grew up in Rockville Centre, NY and graduated from Cheshire Academy in 1949. In his professional life, he practiced real estate law for a number of years before joining his brother William in running Charles H. Greenthal and Co. -- a leading NYC real estate management firm. Once retired, he volunteered at Lenox Hill Hospital, read to the blind and doted on his wife of 59 years who he adored beyond words and was his absolute soulmate. A life-long Mets fan, he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. He is also survived by his mother Lillian West and adored brother William West, and precious step- grandchildren Anna and JT Schmitt and many loved nieces and nephews. We love you dad and will treasure your memory forever. Family will receive friends at Frank Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue (81st Street) on Thursday, July 30, 6-8pm. Service will be at Frank Campbell on Friday, July 31 2015 at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cornell University's Library, which he loved very much: Office of Alumni Affairs and Development, 130 E. Seneca St, Suite 400, Ithaca, NY 14850; [email protected]
