SUNBURY — Jeff Mattox, 60, of Mount Vernon, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Aug. 5, 2015 at his home.
He was born on Feb. 14, 1955 in Columbus, Ohio the son of Neill E. and Pamela J. (Fiero) Mattox.
Jeff was a 1973 graduate of Highland High School and attended Otterbein University. He held numerous certifications in areas ranging from HVAC to Mass Transit Technical Training.
As a young man Jeff loved working on cars and throughout his life he owned over 100 cars; none more important than his Mustangs. He also competitively raced motorcycles and Drag raced.
In June of 1986 he married Colleen A. Thompson in Centerburg. Together they raised each other's children as their own. He was a true family man, doing everything he could for his kids and grandkids. And if you ever spent time with Jeff at family functions, you know he was the life of the party.
For 19 years Jeff worked for Flxible in Delaware until their closing in 1995. Following his time with Flxible Jeff owned and operated H & M Technical Services in Centerburg. For those 13 years he and the family provided bus maintenance and mass transit training. It amazed people how much he know about mass transportation and every working part of an automobile, be it tractor, car, motorcycle, truck … he was an encyclopedia of this industry.
Most car guys love NASCAR and Jeff was no different. He attended the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte and he and Colleen took special trips to the Brickyard in Indianapolis with special friends Connie, Rick and Darlene. Jeff's favorite drivers were Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, and Matt Kenseth.
Jeff also enjoyed getting lost in sci-fi or a good comic book. While he liked both DC and Marvel Comics, his favorites were Spiderman, Batman, and Superman.
Classic rock of the '60s and '70s were a staple in Jeff's life. His kids recalled being awakened early on Saturday mornings to Dad rocking out to Meatloaf, ELO, Journey, CCR, or any number of his favorite bands.
No story about Jeff would be complete without sharing his painful passion for the Cleveland Browns. Years of sports disappointment would not stop him from the excitement that came every fall with the start of a new season. And of course, like any true Ohio sports fan, he was looking forward to watching his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes take the football field this fall.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen of Mount Vernon; his mother, Pamela of Sparta; his children, Jennifer Conde and her husband James of Mount Vernon, Shawn Mattox and his wife Sheri of Westerville, Matthew J. Sanderson and his wife Jami of Sunbury, and Laura Tucker and her husband Tim of Columbus; grandchildren, Alexandra (Nathan) Yost and Brody and Benjamin Conde, Jackson, Averie, and Blake Mattox, Ella and Cole Sanderson; his "little buddy," Trenten Tucker; two sisters, Tammy (Patrick) Goodman of Marengo and Cheryl Mattox of Sparta; his in-laws, Carlton and Janet Thompson of Delaware; and his best friend of 40 years Rick (Darlene) Ross of Sunbury.
He was preceded in death by his father, Neill; his brother, Wayne; and his sister, Melody.
Words cannot express the importance of family and what their time spent together meant to Jeff. He so loved his children and his grandchildren were the light of his life.
Friends may call on the family from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9 at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 637 State Route 61, Sunbury, Ohio 43074. Funeral services will be held there at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, 2015. Burial will follow in Bloomfield Cemetery in Centerburg.
