Shafer, Sr., John D.
John D. Shafer, Sr., 65, of Rosendale, died Thursday, August 13, 2015, at his home.
He was born on June 10, 1950, in Beaver Dam, a son of Bernard and Grace Braatz Shafer.
On September 19, 1970, he married Susan B. Liegl in Oakfield.
Some of John's favorite things included his family. He took such pride in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They spent vacations, holidays, and ordinary days together making special memories.
He loved collecting John Deere memorabilia. Farming was such a large part of his life and he loved to collect historical pieces. One of John's last wishes was to go to the John Deere museum in Illinois with his sons and grandsons.
John loved his Green Bay Packers and loved going to games with his wife, Sue, and taking turns bringing their different grandchildren.
One of John's favorite memories was his recent trip to Hawaii with Sue. Many of the friends they made during the trip stopped in often to visit and were a great source of comfort.
John was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and had a secure faith in his Savior, Jesus. He went into the shadow of death with the assurance of free and faithful love and forgiveness.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; two sons, John (Julie) Shafer and Chris (Michelle) Shafer, both of Fond du Lac; eight grandchildren, Alysa (Brian) Balfour, Emily (Zach) Voss, Isabella Shafer, Morgan Shafer, John Shafer III, Oliva Shafer, Ben Shafer, and Drew Shafer; one great-granddaughter, Ellie Voss; his mother, Grace Shafer of Ripon; two sisters, Pat (Chuck) Michels of Minocqua; and JoAnn (Bob) Mallard of Madison; three brothers-in-law, Richard (Shirley) Liegl of Fond du Lac; Joseph (Janet) Liegl of Chapel Hills, North Carolina; and Melvin (Cindy) Liegl of Grafton; and a sister-in-law, Lavinia (Hal) Draves of Oakfield.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard, and a brother, Steve.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 606 Forest Avenue, Fond du Lac, with Rev. James Borgwardt officiating.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday at church from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Sue, Susan and I offer you our sincere condolences. We are keeping thoughts of you and your family close to our hearts.
I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to see my cousin, John, when we were in Wisconsin earlier this summer. And I'm so glad I was able to help him check off an item on his "bucket list".
Words don't do much to heal the pain in your heart, but please be comforted by knowing that you did everything possible for him and that now, he is at peace. As long as he is remembered, he will live on in your heart and mind.
Love, Bob & Sue

◦The tide recedes but leaves behind
bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle
warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops, and yet it echoes
on in sweet refrains.....
For every joy that passes,
something beautiful remains.
His memory will be forever tucked in your hearts. Enjoyed our short friendship with him.
Thoughts to you all Sue, John, Julie and family; Chris, Shelly and family
