WESTFORD -- Alfred C. Herget, 78, of Westford, died Wednesday, August 12th, 2015, following a 10 year battle with cancer.
He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, December 28th, 1936, son of the late Alfred C & Matilda (Turner) Herget. He was extremely proud of his Nova Scotian heritage. As a teenager, he came to the United States, eventually settling in Westford.
He graduated from Lowell Technical Institute and received his MBA from Northeastern University.
Mr. Herget served in the 65th Battalion of the U.S. Army out of Fort Monmouth, NJ and later Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served 18 months in Okinawa.
Al worked for many years in the Printed Circuit Industry for NVF Company. Al owned and operated Al Herget Real Estate for many years and later founded Advanced Technical Marketing, serving as CEO and President. In retirement, Al held various jobs over the years including Limo Driver, Ski Resort, and Funeral Home attendant.
Through his life, Al was very involved within his community. He served as President of Westford Youth Hockey, president of Northeast Circuits Association (NECA), Past President of Northeastern University Taylor Society, was a Mason, and a Member of the Westford Finance Committee. Throughout his years, Al coached youth hockey, baseball, and was coach of the Lowell Junior Chiefs (17-21 year olds). He was also a committee member involved in Westford's 275th Anniversary celebration.
Mr. Herget enjoyed many hobbies including cooking, gardening, farming, raising animals, traveling and boating. His real passions were hockey, photography, and spending time with family and friends.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Pamela A (Kligerman) (Goldthwaite) Herget; one sister and her husband, Madeline & Aubrey Acker of Maine; two daughters and their husbands, Sheila & Scott Hulings of Westford, MA, Terese & Neil Downs of Canada; one son, Alfred C. (Chet) Herget III of Littleton, MA; two step-sons, Jason and Jeanine (Menicci) Goldthwaite of Pepperell, MA, and Joey Goldthwaite and Stephanie Morris of Pasadena, CA; 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former wife, Jeanne Purpura.
Al will be greatly missed by his loyal terrier, Cassidy, and all the many friends he has accumulated throughout the years.
Al was predeceased by two brothers, Albert and Burley Herget.
HERGET -- ALFRED C. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 pm at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD. His Funeral Service will be on Tuesday at 11 o'clock at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 75 Cold Spring Rd., Westford. PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Westford.
