Gulfport

Catherine Smith Diamantopoulos, age 75, of Gulfport, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 4, 2015. Born January 14, 1940 in Steep Hollow, MS where she grew until the family moved to North Gulfport. She graduated from Harrison Central High School in Gulfport with the class of '58. She worked for Gayfer's Department Store for 23 years where for 10 years she won recognition as the top selling associate for the South East Region.

Catherine married Richard James Diamantopoulos on March 18, 1960 in St. John's Catholic Church in Biloxi and they enjoyed 55 years as constant, devoted companions. Miss Cathy was an active member of the Krewe of Athena and the Krewe of Billikins. She enjoyed travel, fashion, and Mardi Gras, but took a special delight in her children. She accompanied her husband on many trips to Washington, DC where they met with senators, and congressmen. She made an impression on these dignitaries, helping to persuade their votes to improve life for those living on the Gulf Coast. She received recognition from Pope Benedict XVI for service to the community with St. Vincent de Paul Society following Hurricane Katrina.

Catherine is survived by her spouse, Richard, of Gulfport; her children Richard Craig Diamantopoulos, of Lompoc, CA and Andrea Lynn Bond of Poplarville, MS; her grandchildren, Christopher Bond and Rachel Bond of Poplarville, Sophia Diamantopoulos and Richard Nicholas Diamantopoulos of Lompoc, CA; her niece Tracy Morton of Gulfport as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall Smith and Roxie Johnson Smith; and 10 siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 9:45 am at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 2090 Pass Road, Biloxi, MS where friends may visit with family beginning at 9:15 am. Interment will follow the service at Biloxi National Cemetery.

Catherine was my mother L. Edwina Barton's first cousin. My Grandfather was Daniel Prentis Smith and he an Uncle Marshall were very close. Catherine and I were the same age. I remember her well. She was a special person, and I know you will miss her greatly.
