Howard Weldon Obituary

October 1, 2015 Howard S. Weldon, Jr., MD, FACS died at his home Thursday, October 1, 2015, one month and one week before his 70th birthday, following a brief period of living with cancer. He was surrounded by his loved ones and at home on his farm when he passed. Dr. Weldon practiced general and vascular surgery in Phenix City, Alabama and Columbus, Georgia for more than thirty-eight years. A graduate of Opelika High School (1964) and Auburn University (1967), Dr. Weldon received his MD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he also completed his surgical internship in 1972, and he served at the US Public Health Service from 1972 to 1974, and completed a surgical residency at Tulane University (Charity Hospital) in 1977. He was made a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1980. Intellectually curious, famously hardworking, and down-to-earth funny, "Doc" never wavered in his conviction that medicine was a ministry and a gift to be shared with his fellow human beings. In his office hung a version of a favorite quote from the sixteenth-century French surgeon Ambroise Pare: "For my part I have dispensed liberally to everybody the gifts that God has conferred upon me, and I am none the worse for it; just as the light of a candle will not diminish, no matter how many may come to light their torches by it." Like his father before him, a fellow physician and farmer, "Doc" lived a full life of multiple vocations and avocations, all of which were united by a spirit of humility, generosity, and wonder. Equally curious about the intricacies of the vascular system or of Civil War history, which he enjoyed discussing with his brother Jimmy, he experienced deep delight in quail hunting with his birddogs over his farms in rural Russell County, riding his spotted saddle horse, "Little Joe," planting young longleaf pines, and managing a commercial cattle herd that won him mention as Alabama's Cattleman of the Year in the early 90s. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Phenix City and a lifelong outdoorsman and conservationist, Dr. Weldon also took great pride in his family. He and his wife of forty-five years, Peggy Eastman Weldon, saw their three children, Amy, Carrie, and Daniel, go on to become doctors as well – Carrie and Daniel as successfully practicing doctors of veterinary medicine in the Columbus area and Amy as a tenured professor of literature at Luther College. Dr. Weldon delighted in welcoming Philip Cowley to the family, and he treasured his grandchildren, Elizabeth and John Philip Cowley. Dr. Weldon is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Howard S. Weldon, Sr. and Martha Sue Verdin Weldon of Opelika, AL, and several damn fine bird dogs. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Eastman Weldon; his brothers James V. Weldon and Bennett T. Weldon; his daughter Amy Weldon; his daughter and son-in-law Caroline Weldon Cowley and Philip Cowley; his son, Daniel Weldon; his grandchildren Elizabeth and John Cowley; and many friends, patients, colleagues, and bird hunting companions. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Dr. Weldon will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Phenix City, Alabama, at 3:00 pm EST on Sunday 4 October 2015. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the United Methodist Children's Home in Selma, AL, or to the Nancy Eastman Harp Oncology Nursing Scholarship at UAB School of Nursing (NB 119,1701 Univ. Blvd.,1530 3rd Ave. S.,Birmingham, AL 35282-9885), established in 1991 in memory of Nancy Eastman Harp, Peggy's sister. Little did we know then what an important role oncology nurses would play in the lives of this family.

I just learned of Dr. Weldon's passing today from my radiation oncologist. I was floored, I had no idea. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer a year ago this month and Dr. Weldon performed my mastectomy. He was so very caring, knowledgeable and reassuring. When he delivered the news that my cancer had spread and how aggressive it was...he never wavered from saying how..."we were going to get through this". It is rare to find a Doctor these days like he was...I often wished I had known him before my diagnosis. His velvet touch helped my Family and I through some of the very darkest times of this cancer journey. I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Weldon...to say that he will be missed is a grave understatement. I am feeling that loss myself deeply today. He will indeed forever be the standard by which I measure all other Physicians.

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Weldon when he first came to Cobb Hospital in Phenix City until 1984. I have fond memories of his good humor and it was a pleasure to make rounds with him on the floor. He respected and appreciated the nursing staff. I respected his genuine care he had for his patients. He touched many lives and will not be forgotten.

Dear Mrs. Peggy,
Today I just learned of Dr Weldon's passing. I am totally heart-broken and finding it very difficult to keep the tears from flowing. I truly loved that man!! He was an absolute joy to work with at The Surgery Center! I'll always cherish our Friday conversations in the lounge while he drank his green tea or diet Coke and read the local paper. Also, like many others, he saved my life! The two of you were so loving and supportive during my battle with breast cancer. He told me, "I'm gonna treat you as if you were my daughter. We're gonna get all tests done and done quickly. We're not sit on this." So my Thanksgiving week in 2010 was spent following Dr Weldon's orders. He had me on the move; calling me almost daily, sometimes twice, just to make sure things were getting done. Early Dec was in surgery with one of the BEST surgeons EVER! I have been telling people for years that I would have let Dr Weldon do surgery on me with him blind-folded because that is how much faith I had in him. After I moved to NC in 2013, whenever I would go to Columbus to visit; I made sure to see Dr Weldon and he always made time for me.In 2014, when I had a rare chest tumor discovered by another surgeon, he collaborated with Dr Weldon who demanded I be sent to Emory and he told me to have copies of reports sent to him so he could keep up with everything going on with me. Always looking out for me! Yes.....truly a wonderful surgeon and friend....someone whom I will never forget and will forever hold close to my heart. Mrs. Peggy, may you and your family find peace and comfort knowing that the Lord has a perfect Angel above! God Bless all of you!

Not only in the God given gift of medical ability but in words of encouragement from Dr. Weldon and his wife, with that said to our congregation half the church stood and we honored you before Our God for giving us the beautiful gift of a Man of God who ministered to our physical bodies and our emotional well being.

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Weldon. He at several times did some kind of surgery on several of our family members. I especially remember him working late in the night on my grandfather giving him much needed relief. He'll always be thought highly of by our family. The Halls, Stricklands, and Hughes.

I was saddened to here of Dr. Weldon's passing. I worked with him at Phenix Regional till it closed and we all went across the river. We will never forget the night he was called and had to do emergency surgery on a pt and we all got hung up /stuck in the elevator. We pushed and we pulled, we tugged to no avail. It does not sound funny but we started laughing and he said "I will meet you upstairs" and RAN up the flight of stairs and met us at the door. Thank goodness the pt was so sedated he did not remember. I know cause I asked. There are many ,many more. He was a great teacher and we all respected him and sometimes us nurses would jostle each other to see who would make rounds with him cause you learned so much. God had other plans for him, He needed the best. You will forever be in our hearts . Our prayers go out to the family.

Doctor Weldon, We're gonna miss you more than we can fathom! You were a one in a million doctor and friend. Old world charm and ethics meets new world technology. LOL You sat at many a bedside and held many patient's hands. I will never forget one in particular. In the hallway at Doctors Hospital, I walked up on you and you were standing outside the room of an elderly patient with your hand on the door handle. Just standing there. I asked if you were ok and you said "No. I gotta go in there and deliver some really bad news, shug." I told you that there is no one that the patient and family would rather hear that bad news from than you. You smiled, went in and took that little lady's hand. Some things speak louder than words and that spoke volumes to me. I take those "family" memories with me. I thank the Lord that He put you into this world and blessed you with the gifts of compassion and healing. We will truly miss you.
Ms. Peggy, We love you! I am so sorry. If there is ever anything that Scott and I can do for you, I don't care what it is, please call me.

Dear Weldon family.
I would like to extend my regrets and pass on some reflections of a guy that seemed a mentor to me in many ways. We spent many, many lunches at Doctors hospital together and I made every effort possible to pick my buddies brain. He was a wealth of information for me on the many subjects we shared a passion for. Particularly his fondness for history of Creek Indians in Ala.,Russell County history, hunting and farming. He was penalized for his loyalty to hospitals on more than one occasion. He was loyal to a fault. There was a passing of much more than words can say when Doctor's Hospital closed. He gave his heart and soul to the place. It is still quite difficult for me to reconcile how fast this all transpired and I hate I could not say goodbye. As he would describe a good man to me, I will remember him similarly-a prince of a fellow.

We just want to let Dr Weldon's family know that they are in our prayers. I first met Dr. Weldon on December 1,1977 my husband had been in an accident at work, a forklift had turned over on him. That was on a Thursday and by Monday night he had to have emergency surgery. I was 9 months pregnant and 19 years old and I was scared. God used Dr. Weldon that night to save my husband's life. Over the years he operated on me many times. He knew I hated my middle name so he always called me Dorothy Jean, and that always made me smile. He will be missed more than I can express. Our family will cherish the memories of all the acts of kindness and compassion that he showed to us through the years. He has left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.

Peggy and family we all loved doc. A few favorite memories for me when he was Chief of staff at Cobb you hosted a Christmas party at your house. I was unable to attend because my son Taylor was born. He sent me flowers in the hospital 1984. When daughter Amy was writing poetry in school he shared it with me. I told him I always wanted to be a writer and he should encourage her to write. He was so proud of all three children and beamed any time his beautiful wife was mentioned. Making rounds with him one day he had to deliver some bad news to a patient. The lady told him she would not have surgery because God would heal her. Doc sat beside her bed and explained his belief that God had given him a gift to help healing. Lastly when his brother became ill and was admitted I recall his mother voicing her concerns that Bubba was worried and had gone to pray. I know you have some wonderful memories and just know we appreciate you sharing him with us.

Dr. Weldon did more than his fair share of making this world a better place. Compassionate and kind he was stern when needed. He was a "gifted" surgeon and very well respected by his peers. He was the definition of a patients advocate. I know several family members and friends that are here today because of his skilled hands and quick thinking. My prayers go out to his family and friends and the medical community who will miss him dearly.

Dr Weldon was a physician in the classic tradition--he selflessly cared for his patients. I remember his spending multiple nights at Cobb Hospital to be immediately available to treat one of my clients in critical medical condition. I am sure he did the same for many others--that was the way he practiced medicine. When my wife, Norma, needed urgent medical attention for suspected cancer, Dr Weldon personally saw to it that she was admitted to the hospital, all necessary tests performed and surgery scheduled and performed in record time. I am sure he did no less for thousands of other patients over his medical career. With the loss of Dr Weldon, we have lost not only a great physician and surgeon, but a truly caring and compassionate human being. But we can rest assured that thousands of patients and families, and hundreds of medical professionals have benefited and had their lives changed for the better by the presence of Dr Weldon in their lives.

My sincere deepest sympathies to the family. I feel like Dr. Weldon saved my life last year during my surgery. I put my complete faith in His healing hand and those of Dr. Weldon's.

It was a pleasure and an honor to work with Dr. Weldon. His heart was always for the patient and I loved his humble spirit when he thought his approach could have been softer in a specific situation. We have lost an incredible surgeon and person in our healthcare community. To his family, thank you for allowing him to share so much of his time and talents with us throughout the years..praying that you will have strength and peace as you go through this very difficult time.
