LEWES - Mary S. Hazzard passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, Oct 1st 2015. Mary, also known as "Mom", "Mommom" or "Dolly" to many, was born in Milford on May 20th, 1927, daughter of Felix Short and Delema Wilson. She moved to Lewes after graduating from Milford High School and marrying her husband Francis R. Hazzard. Together they raised their family of four boys and one girl on the Hazzard Family Farm on Conley's Chapel Road. As a newlywed couple, Francis and Mary helped raise Mary's three younger sisters. With her generous and loving spirit, Mary frequently opened her home to others, caring for many in their time of need. She operated a home daycare for seven years with her daughter and daughter-in-law. She was known for her ingenuity and craftiness, from the garden to the kitchen. Mary enjoyed researching and sharing her family history. Some of her hobbies included writing, journaling, crocheting, quilting and she was an avid collector of Longaberger baskets. A lady of strong will and determination, she was always willing to share her thoughts and wisdom. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by Francis, her husband of 54 years, her son Terry Hazzard, daughter-in-law Linda C. Hazzard, and her sister Louise Short. She is survived by her son Michael A. Hazzard and fiancée Sharon Drain of Lewes, daughter Linda F. (Hazzard) Wardrup and husband Doug Wardrup of Harbeson, daughter-in-law Debbie (Howarth) Hazzard of Lewes, son Steven W. Hazzard of Florida, son Francis R. Hazzard Jr. and wife Yanhui Hazzard of Maryland, her brother Jack Short of Wilmington, and sister Laura Murray of Lewes. Mary is also survived by her nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, devoted neighbors, Chris "Tommy" and Eileen Lewis, and numerous friends and family. A viewing will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Melson's Funeral Home in Long Neck. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7 starting at 12 noon, also at Melson's Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Conley's Chapel Cemetery on Robinsonville Road. With Mary's favorite color being lavender, lilac, or pretty much any shade of purple, we would love to see you wear any shade of purple in her honor.
