Mark Lewis Obituary

Aug. 24, 1944 ~ Nov. 6, 2015
St. George, UT-Mark Meredith Lewis, M.D., 71, passed away early on the 6th of November, 2015 in St. George, Utah. He was born the 24th of August, 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Joseph P. Lewis and Janet Shurtliff. He married his eternal companion Fae Bartholomew in Manti, Utah on September 3, 1966.
Mark grew up in Encino, California. He served a faithful mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil from 1963-1965. After returning, he graduated from Brigham Young University in 1968 and later completed an MD from the University of Southern California in 1972. He was a medical resident at the University of Michigan, after which he returned to Utah where he served as an ophthalmologist in Salt Lake City, Provo, Vernal, Roosevelt, and St. George. In addition to medicine, he was an avid student of theology and had a deep love for studying and teaching the scriptures. He spent his life serving others through hard work and excellence in medicine, contributing to his religious community, and enjoying the company of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his loyal dog Scraps and is survived by his eternal companion, Fae Bartholomew Lewis, and his six children: Bennett Lewis, Janalee Zhdan, Brenda Price, Kristina Green, Nathan Lewis, and Randall Lewis. He is also survived by their spouses, his 17 grandchildren, and his 9 siblings.
Sincere thanks are given to Dr. Joseph Te, his associates and the staff at Dixie Regional Hospital for their care as he battled pancreatic cancer these past eight months.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the East Ridge LDS Ward Chapel, 912 South 1740 East, St. George, Utah. Not sure what to say?

I will always be thankful Mark invited me to join his practice following my graduation from optometry school in 1984. From Mark I learned what it is to be a kind and caring professional. A truly gifted surgeon who served his patients with empathy and understanding.

Rest in Peace my good friend Mark Lewis MD. Always was kind to me when we worked together at St. Mark's Hospital. Later honored to be his patient in Saint George. Always in good humor with a smile that lit the room. A gentleman in every respect. Gordon K Larson, MD.

Fae, I hope you heard my message on Mark's cell phone. I didn't have any other contact number for you. I was surprised and saddened to learn of Mark's rather sudden passing. Although I have not seen either of you for several years, I have thought of you often. We enjoyed getting to know your family. Mark and I spent many good years in ophthalmology in Salt Lake City. I learned a lot from him and we had many good times together. I was hoping to see him again. I will truly miss him. I pray the Lord's choices blessings to attend you and your family.
Sincerely,
Steve Jackson

Dan & Jody Eby were fortunate enough to know him. We will never forget his helpfulness and kindness towards us when Dan detached his retina and replaced a lens in his eye. He had a great bedside manner and hope there will be more doctors like him. We are glad that we knew him. It is a great loss.

I was privileged to be employed by Mark for several years as his assistant. He was a Amaizing person, he loved serving his patients with a personal commitment to do his very best for each one. Mark had a natural talent to build a family with all who worked with him and for him.I thought of him as my younger brother. My thoughts, prayers and love to Fae and all the family

What fond memories I have of this "great"
man. I spent many years in his employment and was always treated as a special friend. Thank you Mark for all of the good times we had in the office. It was a joy to be associated with you and all of our patients that dearly loved you. My love to Fae and your children.

I remember Mark when he was a missionary in Brazil. He would come to work on the chapel construction site where my father, Vern Taylor, was supervisor. The two of them really enjoyed each other's company; I bet they will have time for a reunion now.

I had the privilege of practicing with this distinguished physician and surgeon for the first ten years of my career. Mark's genuine care and concern for his patients and the requirement for precise surgical outcomes was a model and philosophy others could only hope to emulate. His sense of humor was contagious, and his commitment to studying matters both secular and eternal commanded my full respect. Mark, what an honor it was to be your friend and to be accepted as your brother.
