Jean L. Aschman, 83, of Mahanoy City, passed away unexpectedly Thursday at Ridgeview Nursing & Rehabilitation, Shenandoah Heights.
Jean was born in Mahanoy City, Feb. 19, 1932, a daughter of the late Anthony and Stella Adams Pangonis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward W. "Buddy" Aschman, in 2009.
In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she was affectionately known as "everybody's mommy" for caring for scores of children in an in-home day care center for more than 20 years.
Jean was passionate about the holiday season, making sure her home was always beautifully decorated. She was a dedicated Philadelphia Phillies fan.
She was the last member of her immediate family.
Surviving are three sons, Jeffery Aschman, Rock Glen, Anthony Aschman, Mahanoy City, and Greg Aschman, Langhorne; three grandchildren, Dr. Dana Barry, Derek and Jeremy Aschman; nieces, including her caregiver, Susan Kester, and Roseann Hayes; a nephew, James Chesko; her friend and companion, Vinny Killian; other nieces and nephews; cousins.
Funeral services and details will be announced at a later date. Jane Clifford Ritz Funeral Home, Mahanoy City, Franklin R. Fetter, funeral director, has charge of arrangements.

Members of the Mahanoy City High School Alumni Association extend their sincere sympathies to Jean's family. She is fondly remembered by her classmates (1952) and friends from MCHS.
