Raymond Alex Martin
SCOTT - Raymond Alex Martin, 77, who will be remembered for his laughter, joyfulness and love of family, died peacefully surrounded by his family at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital on March 24, 2016.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held to celebrate his life on Monday, March 28 at 11:00 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Scott, Louisiana. Entombment will be in the mausoleum of Sts. Peter and Paul Mausoleum. Reverend Gary Schexnayder, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church will be the Celebrant of the funeral mass.
Raymond was a parishioner of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Scott, LA and had been an usher for many years. He often worshiped at St. Martin DePorres in Scott. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, Rural Letter Carrier Association, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Cattlemen's Association, and had been in the Army National Guard.
Raymond was a native and life-long resident of Scott, Louisiana born March 6, 1939. He was the proud president of the Scott High School graduating class of 1957. He was a good worker and held a variety of jobs. Raymond worked on the family farm raising hogs. In 1970, he was named outstanding hog farmer in Louisiana. He later switched to cattle which continued until his death. He worked at the Shell Corner Station in Scott, drove a school bus for many years and was a rural letter carrier for 32 years. In retirement, Raymond worked preparing the barns for the 4-H/FFA livestock shows.
He enjoyed being with his family and was so proud of them. He enjoyed being with his many cousins and friends. He held a Sunday morning coffee gathering for many years and loved his two bouree groups. He was a UL fan and enjoyed many games especially basketball games at Blackham Coliseum.
Raymond leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years Gertrude; his three sons, Dwayne and his wife Melanie of Scott, Tony of Alexandria and Lance of Houston, Texas; granddaughters, Jessica and her husband Jacob Doxey and Sarah Martin, all of Scott.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alex Jr. and Elbe Hernandez Martin, and his brother George and wife Mona Mire Martin.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Delhomme Funeral Home - Scott on Sunday, March 27, 2016 from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM on Sunday evening in the funeral home. Visiting hours will continue on Monday from 8:00AM until 10:45 AM. A Rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM on Monday.
Pallbearers will be Dwayne Martin, Tony Martin, Lance Martin, Sid Breaux, Mike Breaux and Stan Dutile. Honorary pallbearers will be Jacob Doxey, Gene Bacque, Allen Dugas, Rick Breaux, Dale Breaux, Gary Toche and his bouree buddies.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Raymond's name to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Lafayette, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, 1301 Old Spanish Trail, Scott, LA 70583 or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Our Lady of Lourdes, Dr. Gene Brierre, Dr. Richard Fei, Dr. Rahan Ali, the staff of AMG Specialty Hospital at Park Place and the staff of Lafayette Physical Rehabilitation Hospital for their excellent care to Raymond during his illnesses.

So sorry to hear about Raymond's passing. We go back a long way as neighbors and our kids grew up together. Our last meeting with him was for Ray Mouton's wake. It was so good to see Raymond and his wife Gertrude again. Deepest Sympathy to Gertrude and the boys and their families at this time........
