GREENFIELD - Virginia E. (Barr) Newman, 92, of Greenfield died on Monday (4-11-2016) at Buckley HealthCare Center. Born on January 7, 1924 in Byesville, OH, Virginia was the daughter of William and Mabel (Griffith) Barr. She was a 1941 graduate of Byesville High School and in the graduating class of 1944 from Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. Virginia worked many years in the Ohio River Valley as a public health nurse.
Virginia married Harold L. Newman on November 28, 1946 in Ohio. Together, they moved to Greenfield in 1961. After relocating here, she became the In-Service Director at the former Franklin Nursing Home, from 1969 until her retirement in 1993. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Greenfield, involved in Girl Scouts, an advisor for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and a 50-plus year member and Past Matron of the Arcana Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a volunteer in the Greenfield Public Schools, and along with her husband, volunteered many hours at the Greenfield Tourist Information Center.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands: Tamara (William) Beauregard of Greenfield and Cheri (Richard) Ducharme of Turners Falls; three grandchildren: Chad (Jaclyn) and Kyle Beauregard and Aimee Ducharme and two great-granddaughters, Ava and Paige Beauregard. She also leaves her brother Edward Barr of Cambridge, OH. She was predeceased by her husband Harold on July 22, 2007.
Funeral services for Virginia will be on Thursday (4-14-2016) at 11 a.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 14 High Street, Greenfield with Rev. Susan Bowman officiating. Burial will follow in Green River Cemetery. There will be a one-hour time of visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Perkins School for the Blind Braille and Talking Books Library, 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA 02472 or the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
