Thomas L. Soule, 84, of Englewood, Florida, formerly of Enfield, died on April 6, 2016.
He is survived by his friend and wife of 63 years, Joyce (Baringer) Soule; and his four children and their spouses, Thomas and Jane Soule of Somers, John and Jamie Soule of Granby, Matthew and Laura Soule of Granby, and Lucinda (Soule) and Scott Flaherty of Clinton. He leaves seven grandchildren, Thomas (Buddy) Soule, Leigh Soule, Alexandra Soule, Mallory Soule Ragion, Nathaniel Soule, Madeline Soule, and Rachel Soule; and six great-grandchildren, Julia, Nolan, Thomas, Lennon, Sunnie, and Jack. He is also survived by his sister, Karen (Soule) Bush of Goldsboro, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald (Charlie) Soule; and his brother-in-law, Ron Bush.
Son of Alice (Samson) and Thomas Soule, Tom was born in Hazel Park, Michigan and grew up in Orwell, New York, graduating from Sandy Creek Central School. He earned his B.A. from SUNY Albany, where he met Joyce. Tom served in the U.S. Army for two years following his graduation from college. After teaching a year in Gloversville, New York, Tom began his professional career as an engineer at Hamilton Standard, earning his masters degree and completing 35 successful years. A career highlight was his work on the SR71 "Blackbird" at Area 51.
Tom and his family had spent two years on assignment near West Palm Beach where he fell in love with sailing. This culminated in a memorable two-month sailing trip to Key West with Joyce and two dear friends. Tom and Joyce also enjoyed a canal boat trip on the Erie Canal with other old friends. For many years Tom loved sailing out of Old Saybrook, in and around Long Island Sound, and to many New England ports. Tom was a wonderful husband, father, and friend, a man of great integrity and humility. He will be missed.
