Jimmy Douglas "Jim" Moseley
Greenville
Mr. Jimmy Douglas "Jim" Moseley, 72, died on Thursday, April 21, 2016 peacefully, at home, surrounded by his family.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday at 10 AM in Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, officiated by his pastors, Rev. John Strother, Liz Hounshell and Rev. Dan Powers. A graveside service will be held Monday at 3:00 PM in Oleander Memorial Gardens in Wilmington, NC.
Jim was born in Edgecombe County on May 23, 1943, son of the late Amos C. and Ida Ruth Owens Moseley.
Jim grew up as a typical southeastern North Carolina farm boy, working the land, caring for their animals, playing in the creeks and the woods, going to school and McKendree United Methodist Church on Sunday. He worked in the tobacco and corn fields, planting, then harvesting the fruits of labor, by the side of his parents, his brother and sister. In his childhood world, there were dogs named Jenny and Scottie, the cow named "Cussey" and "Old Red" the horse. At a very young age, Jim developed a love for all things that go Vroom, Vroom, Vroom. He built his first bicycle from parts he found in a burlap bag at the junk yard. Not long after its completion, he and his brother Clark transformed that junkyard bike into his first motorcycle by adding an old lawnmower motor. This was the first of many of his motorcycles, the last being his prized Honda Aspencade. These early efforts became a lifelong hobby of collecting old classic cars and old car parts then restoring them to their original condition. His love of classic cars led to many road trips with his good friend, John Kledis, to Carlisle, Pa. for classic car shows, auctions and competitions. Over the years, with the assistance of his brother, Clark, he restored several Ford Thunderbirds and Mustangs; his pride and joy being his 1957 Carolina Blue T-Bird.
Jim graduated from West Edgecombe High School and attended East Carolina University. He began his long career in telecommunications with Carolina Telephone in Tarboro, NC. He soon received an opportunity to work with Southern Bell. His career with Bell South spanned more than 30 years, transitioning with the company through all the corporate changes, Southern Bell, Bell South and finally AT&T. Jim was the personification of learning the telephone business from the ground up. He began his career as a lineman, climbing telephone poles, hanging lines, and installing home telephones. Through his hard work and work ethic, he was soon noticed by upper level management. Jim was quickly put on the fast track to assume managerial responsibilities within the company. Throughout his career, Jim was literally on the move across the state of North Carolina. He assumed opportunities in Raeford, Laurinburg, Wilmington (he was moved to Wilmington twice), Greensboro, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, and Asheville. When AT&T needed a special projects manager Jim accepted that position in Atlanta, GA. Upon completing several special projects he moved again to Augusta, GA., accepting a Senior Level Executive position responsible for the Southeastern Region of South Carolina and Georgia. Jim retired from AT&T in 1998.
Upon Jim's retirement, he and Connie returned to North Carolina and established their home in Greenville, NC. They joined Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church where Jim served on the Board of Trustees, Administrative Council, Lead Usher, and an honorary member of Jarvis United Methodist Women. He was always willing to help with any UMW's projects or special events at Jarvis MUMC. He was an avid ECU PIRATE fan and a member of the Pirate Club. In the fall, he loved attending home football games at Dowdy-Ficklen cheering on his Pirates. ARRGH!
He was an active volunteer in his community wherever he resided. He served as Chair of Asheville United Way, as well as Asheville Junior Achievement. Jim was an honest, quiet, and kind man with a delightful sense of humor. He maintained his teasing sense of humor throughout his life. He was a devoted husband, dad, granddad, PaPa Jim, son, brother and friend. Jim had an adventurous spirit and a great sense of fun. He loved to travel with Connie, experiencing new places and cultures. He never met a stranger and was simply a joy to be around.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Moseley was preceded in death by his: brother, Amos Clark Moseley and sister, Linda Moseley Bright.
Jim is survived by his: devoted wife, Connie Britt Moseley, of Greenville, NC; 3 daughters, Donna M. Pelham, Esq., Fayetteville, NC, Dr. Cynthia M.
