William Roscoe Angel, known to his friends and family as "Mickey," passed away April 23, 2016. A Christian man of exemplary character, he was easy with a smile, warm to each soul he met, and the embodiment of the golden rule.
Born August 3, 1933 in the tiny railroad town of Oakdale, Tennessee, he was the son of Roscoe Allen and Vassie Hillman Angel. Mickey joined the Boy Scouts at an early age and became an Eagle Scout over his many wonderful summers at Camp Pellissippi. He graduated from Oakdale High School with multiple Varsity letters and attended Tennessee Tech in their ROTC program, graduating with a degree in Chemistry. After college, he served in the Army and was stationed at Ft. McClellan in Anniston, Alabama. It was there that he met the love of his life, Dorothy Virginia Wells. He proposed to her on their third date and they were married four months later. Soon after, he got a job in Atlanta with the Pillsbury Baking Co., and they found a new church home as well, at First United Methodist Church of Atlanta, There, he and Dot joined the St. Andrew Class, where they made so many of their life-long friends. For years, Mickey pitched on the church's softball team, served on the Board of Stewards, taught Sunday School, and was a stalwart in the church choir. He performed the lead role in the Porter Place Players’ rendition of The King & I, and would later lead many canoe trips down the Suwannee River, introducing a new generation of explorers to the wonders and beauties of nature. Later in his career he worked tirelessly for Handee Pak & Golden State Foods where he formed many wonderful friendships.
A loving, nurturing family man and a doting father and husband, he once turned down a lucrative job that would require him to work on weekends, so that he could spend more time with his family. Mickey was a true Renaissance Man: he loved sports, music, golf, bird watching, Boggle, laughing 'til he cried, crossword puzzles, reading pretty much anything he could get his hands on, a good buffet, picking blackberries with friends… and especially sharing his love of the Masters with everyone he met. An eternal optimist, he made friends wherever he went, and had many close to him who considered him the best friend they ever had. To Mickey's lasting sorrow, he was preceded in death by Dot by two and a half years; he pined for her each and every day they were apart.
He is survived by his four children Steve, Larry, Sharon, & Connie (all of whom are convinced they were his favorite), along with his sister Sue, and his sons-and-daughters-in-law, Jackie, Alisa, Paul, & Mike. One of the greatest joys of his life were his grandchildren: Lauren, Beth, Carolyne, Renner, Regan, Savannah, & Kendra. His family -- both those he raised and those he adopted into his heart -- will miss him greatly.
Looking for an example of how to live a rich and full life? William Roscoe Angel left us an extraordinary blueprint, and he will be missed more than words can express.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Wednesday at Oglethorpe Hill. The funeral will be held there also at 2:00 on Thursday afternoon in the chapel.
