Carlo "Carl" J. Benassi 1931—2016
Carlo "Carl" J. Benassi of Rockford passed away Thursday July 21, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 23, 1931, in Duluth, MN; the son of Joseph and Rosemary Benassi. He came to Rockford in 1962, from Jacksonville, FL. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married Patricia Martin on May 9, 1952, who predeceased him in 1983. He then married Josephine Maggio on May 24, 1986. He graduated from Morgan Park High School. Earned his BS in Industrial Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He then went on to get his Masters at NIU. He started out in Jacksonville, FL as a drafting teacher, went on to be the department head of Industrial Education at Auburn High School. Retired in 1991. Member of St. Bernadette Church. Member of the NEA and IEA and NRA. Boy Scout Volunteer. He enjoyed woodworking, building furniture, helping neighbors, hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Josephine; children, Theresa Powles of Millstadt, IL, Patricia (Gene) Ester of Stoughton, WI, Carl (Jean) Benassi of Poplar Grove, IL, Monica (Patrick) Larkin of Cape Coral, FL, Roseann Salamone of Sarasota, FL, Marcella (David) Kramer of Fairview Heights, IL, Anthony (Kathleen) Benassi of Winnebago, IL, Peter Benassi of Chicago, IL, Matthew (Linda) Maggio of San Diego, CA, Carl (Beverly) Maggio of Harvest, AL and David (Cheryl) Maggio of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Christopher Powles, Jonathan Powles, Benjamin Ester, Bethany Ester, Havilah (Jonathan) Wakerhauser, Justin (Heather) Benassi, Elise Benassi, Francis Benassi, Joseph Benassi, Ashley (Lee) Hosselton, Daniel Salamone, Erica Salamone, Cole Salamone, Angela Kramer, Paul Kramer, Jessica Kramer, Steven Kramer, Nathanael (Debra) Benassi, Isabella (Nick) Newcomer, Emilia Benassi, Patrick Benassi, Matthew Benassi, Samantha Maggio, Carrie (Quaid) McFarlen, Amanda Maggio, Mark (Allix) Maggio, Matthew Maggio; great-grandchildren, Jaxson Maggio and Theodore Benassi; sister, Helen Patten of Kearney, MO; brother, Joseph (Olympia) Benassi of International Falls, MN. Predeceased by his parents; first wife, Patricia; infant son, Daniel Joseph; brothers, Dominic, Andrew, Frank and infant brother, Frank; sister, Agnes Scott.
Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at St. Bernadette Church. Burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday in Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 3910 N. I enjoyed my classes with him at Auburn H.S. in the late 60's and as a customer at Builders Square. Great guy and great teacher. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Sincere condolences to his family.
