Edward Schumacher Obituary

Schumacher, Edward Walter Richard

Ed, "Eddie" Schumacher was born into eternal life on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at Angels Grace Hospice, Oconomowoc. He was born on May 13, 1920 in the Town of Emmett, Marathon County, Wisconsin, to John and Clara (Brandt) Schumacher. He was the eighth of nine children born to his parents. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his five older brothers, John (Marie), Erwin (Daisy), August (Theresa), William (Katherine) and Arthur (Emmie), and three sisters, Selma (William) Thurs, Elsie (Robert) Baumann and Clara (Mervin) Ihle.

While attending elementary school at a one-room schoolhouse near Marathon City, Ed helped out on the family farm. In his early teens, he and his brothers worked at various businesses including home construction, bar tending and running the Poplar Tree Dance Hall near Marathon City, as well as the French Lake Resort in northern Wisconsin. Ed worked for the Coca Cola Company for 34 years, first as a delivery driver, then route manager and finally as manager of the Wausau Branch of the Coca Cola Bottling Company, retiring in 1982. During his career he made many lasting friendships within the greater Wausau business community. He was a lifelong member of Trinity-On-Stewart Lutheran Church in Wausau.

From January 3, 1942 to November 25, 1945, Ed served in the Armed Services during World War II, rising to the rank of Sargent in the Army Air Force's 868th Bomber Squadron. He earned service medals in both the American and Asiatic Pacific Theaters. His six overseas service bars include service on Okinawa, New Guinea, New Caledonia and Biak.

On December 11, 1948, Ed married the love of his life, Valeria "Val" Helen Michalski. Ed and Val lived their entire married lives in Wausau. Val preceded Ed in death on October 29, 2013.

Ed is survived by their son Edward "Randy" Schumacher (Miriam), grandchildren Aaron Schumacher of Milwaukee, Kristen Schumacher of San Leandro, California and Alexander Keppler of Platteville, Wisconsin.

Ed and Val both loved the outdoors, especially fishing together. Ed also enjoyed hunting with his family and spending time at his hunting cabin in northern Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 501 Stewart Avenue, Wausau. Rev. Gary Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services, all at the church.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Angels Grace Hospice for their kind, compassionate care of Ed during his brief stay there.
