Margaret Amelia O'Mara
June 28, 1926 - August 17, 2016
Margaret Amelia O'Mara passed peacefully in the early morning hours of August 17, 2016.
Margaret was born to parents Elmer and Elsie Mitchell on June 28, 1926. Margaret grew up in Albany, OR with her older brother Bill, younger sisters Patricia and Eleanor. Sister Mary and brother Jimmy died in infancy.
Margaret was schooled in Albany and graduated from Albany High School in 1944.
In the summer of 1950 Margaret's sister-in-law, Joyce, introduced Margaret to her cousin, Albert O'Mara. Albert was a WWII Navy veteran and was attending Willamette University. A few months later they married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany OR on September 9, 1950.
The newlyweds moved to Salem, Portland, Corvallis, Eugene and returned to Salem in 1964.
During these years their family grew with the birth of Kathleen, Michael, Dennis, Peggy and John. Margaret and Al were loving parents and instilled in their children the importance of family and faith.
Margaret and Albert enjoyed 44 years of marriage until his passing in 1995. In later years she was able to travel to Europe, visiting Ireland and Rome. She attended mass at the Vatican which was a memorable experience.
Most recently she resided at the Mt. Angel Towers where she made many lasting friendships.
She was a wonderful mother and wife and a woman of tremendous faith. Her family and faith were the two most important things that sustained her throughout her life.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, husband Albert, son Dennis, brothers Bill and Jimmy, and sisters Mary and Patricia Campbell.
She is survived by her sister Eleanor Rice; her daughters, Katie Bowen (Dave), Peggy Smalley (Skip); sons, Michael (Mary) and John (Kat), and daughter-in-law, Susan O'Mara; grandchildren:Scott, Adam, Elizabeth, Shannon, Joe, Sarah, Tommy and Thad; great-grandchildren:Blake, Karson, Kassidy and Kollin; numerous nieces and nephews; dear friend, Joanne Stuckert.
Mass will be held Friday, August 26, 2016, 10:00 am at St Joseph's Catholic Church located at 721 Chemeketa St NE, Salem, OR. Donations can be made to The Alzheimer's Association located at 1449 Liberty St. SE, Salem, OR 97302. Assisting the family, Howell, Edwards, Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors.
