Bruce Meyer
MANITO - Bruce Earl Meyer, 85, of Manito, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 31, 2016. Bruce was born August 19, 1931, to Clarence and Sarah (Woodley) Meyer at the family farm near Manito, Illinois. The second of two children, he graduated from Manito Community High School In 1949, and went on to Western Illinois University to study agriculture. Bruce served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Europe as part of the Allied Occupational Forces. After serving his country, he remained a member of the local VFW Post # 561. After college, Bruce came home and married his long time sweetheart and neighbor, Beverly Gwen Proehl on June 3, 1956. At that time, he began a long and successful farming career, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He also enjoyed hunting and local sports. Bruce considered himself fortunate to live in the community that he loved, surrounded by family and friends that he loved. Bruce and his wife Beverly volunteered for many community organizations and projects, including the new community pool, the Meadow Lawn cemetery, and the Manito Historical Society. One year, they sponsored a spectacular Memorial Day fireworks display, simply out of love for their community. Bruce is survived by his sons, Matt (Kristen) and David (Gloria) Meyer; six grandchildren, Ashley, Abby, Cooper, Chance, Westin, and Nick, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Russell Meyer, his daughter Gwen Elizabeth Meyer, and his wife, Beverly. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 12, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Manito United Methodist Church with visitation preceding the funeral from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Following the burial in Meadow Lawn cemetery, a meal will be provided at the United Methodist Church. My deepest condolences for the family. Bruce was such a sweet man, I met him at the Manito Subway, I made many of his sandwiches ( he came in so often that I would have his sandwich ready when he walked in the door)
