Joseph "Joe" Richard Root, 85, of Longmont, Colorado, died January 25, 2017 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Joe was born April 18, 1931 in South Bend, Indiana to Roland and Ella Mary (Swalley) Root. The family moved to California where Joe grew up. Joe served one year in the Army Transport Service and nine years in the Air Force. Upon returning to California after the Military, Joe moved along with his family to Michigan. It is there that he met Nancy Brothers while both were on bowling leagues. They married February 1, 1964. Joe attended Sacred Heart Seminary School of Theology in Detroit for two years. Joe was ordained a Permanent Catholic Deacon in 1971 in Detroit. He was among the first group of Permanent Deacons to be ordained. He served as a Deacon at St. Norbert Church in Inkster, Michigan until moving to Colorado in 1975. Joe was the first Deacon to serve at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Longmont. In 1976, Joe began a long and prosperous real estate career. He retired in 1993 from Melody Homes. Joe and Nancy spent 7 years living in Arizona. They returned to Longmont in 2005 part time and went to Arizona for the winters. In 2012 they stayed in Longmont full time from that point on. Survivors: Wife, Nancy Root; Son, Joseph Root, Jr.; Daughter in Law, Coleen Root; Grandchildren, Shane Root, Michael Sanchez, Kayla Sanchez and Kevin Shaffer; Great Granddaughter, Karlee Root. Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Root and sister, Mary Jane Chandler. A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, February 3, 2017, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 323 Collyer St., Longmont, CO. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 am. Please join the family in Benedict Hall, following the Mass of Christian Burial for fellowship, memory sharing and refreshments. Interment will be held at 11:30 am, Monday, February 6, 2017, Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area B, Denver, CO. Military Honors will be presented by the United States Air Force.
