March 2, 1930 - Feb. 13, 2017 Joyce Woodall Machen, 86, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017. Joyce grew up in Fairfield, AL and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1948. She was a long-time resident of Hoover and a long-time member of Shades Mountain Baptist church. Mrs. Machen enjoyed community activities like garden club, bridge club and PTA. She was a devoted wife and mother; and her greatest joy was her family. The family owes a debt of gratitude to her loving and dedicated caregivers, and to Comfort Care Hospice. Mrs. Machen is preceded in death by her husband, Frank G. Machen; granddaughter, Allison M. Haggerty; parents, Irene N. and Dewey S. Woodall; and her sister, Anita W. Steiner. She is survived by her son, Frank G. "Gil" Machen, Jr.; daughters, Janis M. Haggerty and Brenda M. Moore (Daniel); grandchildren, Emily A. Haggerty, Kathryn C. Haggerty, Julie M. Payne (Joshua), April J. Moore, Brittany M. Brain (Jonathan) and Hannah E. Zarzour; and great grandchildren, Hayden L. Haggerty, Haley G. Haggerty, Caroline E. Payne and Andrew A. Payne. The celebration of Joyce's life will be at 3pm on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 2pm. Her burial will be at Southern Heritage.
