Helen Dougherty Obituary

KINGSTON — Helen Dolores "Sis" Dougherty, of Kingston, entered eternal life on March 15, 2017, at the age of 84. She resided at the family homestead and was known by all as "Sis."

Born on May 1, 1932, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Helen (Meighan) Dougherty and the sister of the late John J. "Jack" Dougherty Jr. and the late Jim Dougherty.

Sis graduated from Kingston High School in 1951 and began working at Domoco Gas & Oil Company, a family owned business, where she worked in the main office until her retirement.

An avid golfer, Sis would walk nine holes several times a week at Lehman Golf Club with generations of nephews. Generally known for her jovial temperament, Sis would only exhibit signs of anger if she missed a close putt. In her life, there were no "gimmes." In her youth, she enjoyed playing all sports with her brothers and was a PGA, MLB, NFL and Notre Dame fan. Sis was proud of her Irish heritage and was a devout Catholic, faithfully attending Saturday 4 p.m. Mass at St. Ann's Chapel.

Sis enjoyed starting her day at Sweet Treet in Kingston, where she joined her morning friends for breakfast and hoped to hit it big on "scratchies." Also, Sis enjoyed working in her yard, an occasional trip to Atlantic City or the local casino and spending time with her family and the many good friends she made throughout her life.

Sis will be lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews, John J. Dougherty III, Elizabeth (Dougherty) Crawford, Thomas Dougherty, Kathleen Dougherty, James Dougherty, Leigh Ann Dougherty, John J. Dougherty IV, Charles Crawford, Brian Crawford and Colleen Crawford.

Celebration of Sis's life will begin with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at McLaughlin's, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, and continue there with gathering at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola. Interment will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Parish of Saint Ignatius Loyola, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston, or charity of your preference.

I was so sorry to read about "Sis". She and I were in the same homeroom at Kingston High School. Both of us were very good volleyball players and won many games for our homeroom.

My sincerest condolences to all of her family.
