NEBO, Ill. -- Gerald Paul Shonhart, 73, of rural Nebo, died Thursday, April 6, 2017, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
Gerald was born Sept. 10, 1943, in Pittsfield, a son of the late Paul and Marietta Shaw Shonhart. He married Edna Burns on Dec. 22, 1963, at Nebo Nazarene Church. She survives. Gerald attended Nebo Grade School, graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1961 and attended Western Illinois University in Macomb. After one year of college, Gerald started working for Gib Shaw doing carpentry work and never looked back. He loved carpentry, it was his life. He also worked for Hubbard Milling Co. in Nebo while working as a carpenter at night. He later started his own contracting business, building countless homes in the area and the beautiful Heartland Lodge and Walnut Knob lodges. Gerald farmed livestock for many years, and if he had spare time he enjoyed working on the farm and tending to his livestock and mowing. He was a longtime member of Nebo Nazarene Church, serving as a past board member; served as a precinct committeeman for Spring Creek Township for many years; served two terms for the Pike County Water District; and stayed active in the community. Surviving are Gerald's wife, Edna; a son, David (Beth) Shonhart of Nebo; a daughter, Cindy Shonhart Crowder of Pittsfield; six grandchildren, Marcus (Jayme) Crowder, Matthew (Rachel) Shonhart, Gregory Shonhart, Demi (Devin) Clinton, Cassidy (Hunter) Turner and Samuel Shonhart; and nine great-grandchildren. As long as the homes and lodges that Gerald designed and built stand, he will live on. He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren with all his heart. His love of God, and God's love lit up his whole being when he made a new or met an old acquaintance. But, his grandchildren put the brightest smiles on his face. I am thankful that God blessed my grandchildren with such a loving Grandpa. Rest In Peace Gerald Paul. Wil and I thought the world of you. Wil and Rosemary Wintjen
