Rosella McManus Obituary

Rosella H. McManus

Beloved matriarch of the large McManus family, Rosella Hedwig Hirsch McManus died May 9, 2017. Born on June 2, 1920, in Fosston, Minnesota, to Esther (Hendrickson) and Fridolph Hirsch. She graduated in 1938 from Duluth Central High School and enrolled in Duluth Junior College. She then enrolled in the nursing program at the University of Minnesota.

Rosella earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education in 1943. When she graduated, the University of Minnesota asked her to stay on at the university to teach army nurse corps candidates. She was proud of her nursing education. Over the years she had many types of nursing assignments but her favorite job was Chief Nurse for the Children's Psychiatric Unit at the Mental Health Institute in Cherokee, Iowa.

Rosella enlisted with the Army Nurse Corps in early 1945, and received an honorable discharge in the spring of 1945. She married Terence McManus, a Navy pilot, in Fosston, MN on June 28, 1945. After the war, Terence went to medical school on the GI Bill. They had six children.

Terence's career took the family to Wessington Springs and Sioux Falls, SD; Cherokee and Spencer, IA; and to Spicer and Willmar, MN. In every community, Rosella established a household, made friends, raised the children, and volunteered in the community. She served as president of the Women's Auxiliary to the South Dakota State Medical Assn., was a 60 years member of P.E.O., active in the League of Women Voters and in her church communities.

Survived by her children: Terry of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Robert (Lee Anderson) of Calgary, Alberta; Douglas (Vicky) and Kassie of Port Washington, Wisconsin; Michael (Nyla Knigge) of Sturgis, South Dakota; and Patrick (Mary Beth Johnson) of Omaha, Nebraska; 17 grandchildren; more than 20 great grandchildren; her brother Stanley and sister-in-law, Helen Hirsch; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers Fridolf (Fritz) and Alf; sisters-in-law Barbara Hirsch, Mary Jane McManus Yonda and Alice McManus; brothers-in-law, Edward McManus and Fred Yonda, and many dear friends.

A Memorial Service will be held for Rosella at 5PM on Friday, June 2nd at First Congregational Church, with Rev. Jeff Suddendorf presiding. The family will greet visitors at the church before the service from 3-5PM. The Eernisse Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.eernissefuneralhome.com .

The family has suggested memorials to Doctors Without Borders (P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030).
