ANTHONY SCHIAVI Obituary

SCHIAVI, Anthony A. Age 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 8th, at the Waterview Lodge Healthcare Center in Ashland. He was the devoted husband of the late Laura Schiavi, and father of Kathleen Karrat and her husband Michael of Ashland, Cheryl Deegan and her husband Walter of Hopkinton, and Michael Schiavi and his wife Sara of Milford. He was the proud grandfather of Kathy's 5 children: Camille and her husband Michael Merusi of Upton, Danielle and her husband Robert McMann of Hopkinton, Michelle and her husband Chris Angelo of Hopkinton, MA., Michael Karrat, Jr. and his fiance Christina Valdes of S. Boston and Justin Karrat of S. Boston; and Michael's 4 children: Ethan Schiavi of Brooklyn, NY; Jillian Schiavi of Oakland, CA.; Capt. Alexander Schiavi, USMC at MCAS Miramar, San Diego, CA, and Robin Schiavi of Denver, CO. Anthony was the loving Great-Grandfather to Eva and Tommy Merusi, Carter and Ciara McMann and Lilia Angelo. He is predeceased by his 3 sisters, Jane Brillhart, May Giardini and Lillian Stratton and survived by his brother, Vincenzo Schiavi, all of Framingham. Anthony, the son of Italian immigrants, was a lifelong resident of Framingham. He was the starting catcher for his Framingham High team of 1943 who enlisted in the Marine Corp shortly before graduation. During WWII he fought on Iwo Jima in the Pacific where he received 2 Purple Hearts for injuries suffered during that battle. Coming home from the War he married the love of his life, Laura, started a family and was a Letter Carrier for the Post Office for 40 years, retiring in 1988. Over the years he loved gardening, taking long drives with Laura in the Park Avenue, watching ball games, was an avid golfer, and enjoyed cooking for his family and friends. Long were the days of backyard clambakes and 4th of July fireworks. His homemade pizza was the anticipated appetizer of every family gathering for 30 years. He looked forward to Sunday breakfasts with family and loved talking about Roman history, the American Civil War, and debating the politics of the time. During the 1980s and 90s he traveled with Laura, Cheryl and Walter on trips to Europe (Italy especially), and the West Coast. For 6 years prior to his wife's passing in 2014, he was her sole and totally devoted caregiver. He was a proud, but unassuming veteran, who quietly lived the great American story of his generation. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass on Friday, July 14 at 10 AM at St. George Church, 74 School St., Framingham. Burial will follow at St. Stephen Cemetery, Framingham. Visiting hours at the Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech St. (corner of Union Ave.), FRAMINGHAM, will be Thursday from 4-7 PM. When Tony and Laura visited us in Germany with my brother and Cheryl. I took them on their first Volksmarch. They were so impressed with the whole day even when they walked through the mud and woods. When the walk was finished they enjoyed the oomph band, wine, beer, and great German food. Tony and Laura spoke of that time for years.

Tony I'll always remember your sense of humor and how much you loved your family. You visited me when I was stationed in Germany and I took you and Laura along with Cheryl and Walter on your first Volksmarch and all of you loved walking through the forest and the mud. All of us had a great time. I'll miss you my friend.

Lunch just won't be the same without Tony sitting across the table. His sense of humor and presence will be missed by all.
