Philip I. Reed PITTSTOWN - Philip I. Reed, 93, of Pittstown, husband of Ellen Marie Reed and longtime, retired dairy farmer, passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at Evergreen Commons in East Greenbush. Born June 5, 1924 in Ticonderoga to Silas and Rachael (Weed) Reed, Philip was educated in the Nortonville District #6 School and a 1941 graduate of Lansingburgh High School. He went on to attend the State University of New York, Cobleskill College of Agriculture and Technology and graduated in 1943. He returned to Pittstown and took his place as the fourth generation of farmers on the almost 300 acre Reed Farmstead. He steadily worked to build up and modernize the farm which had suffered loss during the former years of the “Great Depression”, turning it into a well-managed forty-five cow dairy. While attending a dance at the former Dave Denny’s Barn in Latham, he met his beloved wife, the former Ellen Marie Verch of Albany. They were married on November 28, 1954. Together they raised three sons. Philip provided well for his growing family and also his parents who remained at the Reed home during their retirement years. Philip was a lifelong member of the Pittstown United Methodist Church where, as a youth, he was actively involved in the Methodist Youth Fellowship and where he enthusiastically sang in the choir for more than sixty years and served as a trustee. He was a member of both the Pittstown Historical Society and the Norton Cemetery Association serving in the later as Superintendent for many years. In addition to his parents, Philip was pre-deceased by an infant son, David, a brother, Thomas and a sister, Maryanna. Besides his wife Ellen, of almost sixty-three years, he is survived by a brother, Richard Reed (Carol) of Hollister, CA, three sons; Lance, Dwayne (Lori), and Randy, all of Pittstown, three grandsons, Philip (Temple), Jeff (Alesis) and Will and one great-granddaughter, Renee as well as several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August, 25, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at the Pittstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Knapp and Rev. Clyde McCaskill officiating. Burial, with a reception to follow at the Church Fellowship Hall, will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, from 3:30 -7:00 P.M. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 New York Route 7, located in Raymertown. Memorial contributions if desired may be made to the Pittstown United Methodist Church, 45 Old Route 7, Valley Falls, New York 12185.

Marie & Family,
Our family's thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. It was my honor to sing in the Church choir with Phil for many years. I was always in awe of his memory for dates such as birthdays and anniversaries. I will remember him fondly. Wendy D'Avella (Wagner) & Family
