Robert Martin Obituary

Robert E. Martin Jr., 81, of Windsor Locks passed away peacefully on the 3rd day of September, 2017 surrounded by his family.

He was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, to Robert E. and Doris O. Martin and resided in Connecticut since the age of 6. Raised in Farmington, he graduated from Boston University and later from Central Connecticut State University. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force in 1960 and continued his military career for 35 years in the Connecticut Air National Guard. He was passionate about aviation his entire life. He obtained his pilot's license at the age of 16 and continued to fly well into his 70s. He built a homebuilt aircraft and also rebuilt a Piper Cub. He routinely assisted his fellow pilots with their aviation related projects. In a Piper Cherokee, he flew to Alaska and also circumnavigated Australia in a Cessna 172. One of his dreams was to visit all 50 states. He accomplished this by traveling to Nebraska in 2012 with his son Joel and two of his grandsons. He was a lifetime member of the New England Air Museum and a "Quiet Birdman." He also belonged to Chapter 1310 (Skylark) of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Commemorative Air Force Association, the American Legion, and the Sons of the American Revolution.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 56 years, Elaine (Casagrande); his son, Jeffrey and Jackie Martin of Ellington; his son, Joel and Deborah Martin of Marlborough; and a daughter, Amanda Farnsworth of Marlborough. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Corinne, Christina, and Erich Martin, Justin and Kellie Marie Martin, and Brandon, Tyler, and Heather Farnsworth. He also leaves a great-granddaughter, Auden Elaine; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister.

Friends and family may call on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks.

A funeral procession from the Windsor Locks Funeral Home will be Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 52 S. Elm St., Windsor Locks. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Spring Street, Windsor Locks.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New England Air Museum; or Chapter 1310 of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Skylark Airport, East Windsor.

The family wishes to thank the Enfield Dialysis Center for the concern and care shown to Robert over the past several years.

I wish to extend my sympathy to Bob's entire family. I worked with Bob for many years in the CTANG and always admired his dedication and enthusiam. After reading his obituary I found his background to be extremely impressive. All the years working with him I never realized all the education he had received and all the accomplishments he achieved. May the LORD grant you all peace and comfort during this time of mourning.
