Maxwell, Dr. John B.,
Died peacefully in Alexandria, Louisiana on October 31, 2017, at the age of 97. Born in Lexington, KY, he graduated from the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He served residencies at Louisville General Hospital, Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu and the Mayo Clinic. During his college years, he took a leave of absence for a year and a half, working as an ordinary seaman on a tramp steamer.
Dr. Maxwell was the first full-time pathologist at St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, LA, where he served for 35 years.
He had boundless interests outside medicine. An avid reader of classics and history, he was a talented photographer, wood carver, writer, hiker and canoeist, gardener, bird-watcher, pilot and competitive skeet shooter. He was also known for his dry wit and story-telling skills.
His wife, Barbara Perkins Maxwell, who was born and grew up in Louisville, died in 2013. He is survived by three daughters, Barbara M. Meachin of St. Petersburg FL, Anne M. Stage and Marian M. Beaumont, both of Marietta, GA, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at Kramer Funeral Home in Alexandria on Friday, November 17, at 3 p.m., preceded by visitation at 2:30.
