Gloria R. Harris, 95, of Galeton, died on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, at The Country Terrace, Wellsboro.
Born May 23, 1922, in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Helen (Best) Rauch. Gloria graduated from Slatington High School and then received a Bachelors degree in Education from Mansfield State Teachers College in 1944 with a dual certificate in both Homemaking and English and later received her certification in Art.
On July 8, 1944, in Slatington, PA, she married Basil E. Harris, who preceded her in death in March of 2009.
Gloria taught for one year in Willow Grove, PA before coming to the Galeton Area School District where she taught Elementary Art and Home Economics from 1964 to 1980. Gloria was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Galeton.
She volunteered at the PA Lumberman's Museum as recently as 2016 and was awarded the 2010 Outstanding Service Award; she sat on the local Election Board; she was an avid sports fan always rooting for Penn State football, Duke basketball and the Galeton Tigers; and she was a tremendous artist. She was skilled in all types of art, including stained glass and tatting.
Beginning in 1969, she made Christmas angels for each of her granddaughters and her great granddaughter. Surviving are a son, Bruce E. (Karen) Harris of Williamsport; two daughters, Jennifer (Steve) Reid of Geneva, N.Y., and Deborah Jo (Wesley) Detar of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Eric Harris, Mitchell Reid, Julie Reid, Janet Shaw, and Matthew Detar; five great grandchildren, Landon Reid, Weston Reid, Eli Shaw, Rose Detar and Austin Detar; and several nieces and nephews. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Galeton Public Library. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hess Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Collins Chapel, Galeton.
