Irving Kreisberg Obituary

KREISBERG, IRVING passed away on January 11, at his home in Key Biscayne a few months shy of his 100th birthday, with his keen mind intact and engaged. Born in Newark New Jersey, on March 26, 1918 to Morris and Mollie Kreisberg. He graduated from Weequahic HS in 1935 and studied accounting at NYU. He left his family's hotel business to enlist in the military in 1942, serving in the Army Air Force as a sergeant in the 573rd bomb squad stationed in London. Following his discharge he resumed work as a hotelier on Miami Beach (Essex House, London Arms, Anglers Hotel) and in New York's Catskill Mtns (The Fairmont, Peckler Hotel) where he met his beloved wife Marilyn during the summer of 1946. Married in 1947, they moved permanently to South Fl. and had two children. During the 50's and 60's he branched into new businesses, operating the Eastern Motel across from the old Miami International Airport then Airport Florist and Fruit Shipping in the new MIA terminal and other concessions at locations around Miami. He continued to operate hotels on South Beach (The Dorset and Catalina). In the late 70's Irving embarked on a career as a real estate developer with the innovative idea of building and leasing individual cold storage warehouse bays. He was the general partner, with his son, in a trio of buildings from Miami to Delray Beach. He was most happy that his facilities offered the opportunity to many start up companies, mostly specializing in the food industry. His business advice was sought by many and gladly given. Upon retirement Irving and his wife were active volunteers at many cultural and charitable organizations but his real passion was his work with Fellowship House, a private, not-for-profit psychosocial rehabilitation center in South Miami where he was a founding board member and multiple term board president. Since 1979 Irving and his devoted wife of 70 years have lived in Key Colony, Key Biscayne where he served multiple terms as president of both the condo and homeowners associations. As a fixture in the ASK club at the Key Biscayne Community Center he is an inspiration to many of the 'Active Seniors on the Key' Irving's family was the central pillar of his life. He was predeceased by his sister Beatrice Kemper and i s survived by his wife Marilyn, children Deena (Mark) Zarlin, Julian Kreisberg, grandchildren Elijah (Katelyn) Zarlin, Jenais Zarlin, Alec Kreisberg a new great granddaughter Sophie Rose Zarlin , and his sister's children Ronnie and Mitch Kemper, as well as beloved nieces and nephews and their childrren. He will be deeply missed by all. Graveside services will take place Sunday at 1:00pm at Mt. Sinai Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the home of of his son in North Miami Beach. A celebration of his life will be held at the Key Biscayne Community Center, Monday 12:30-2:00. If desired, a donation may be made to Fellowship House or charity of your choice.
