Edward Slevin Obituary

Edward Joseph Slevin 1/10/1936 - 1/18/2018 Ed, a longtime Congressional political advisor, former Peace Corps Associate and Regional Director, and author of his memoir, "Every Moment a Living Memory: 25 years in Peace Corps-25 years in Politics," was surrounded by his loving family when he died from complications of Inclusion Body Myositis. Ed is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet; children: Jeanne Slevin, Cammie Noah (Hope), Maureen Seydel (Fred), Jill Healy (Mike); his grandchildren: Cameron, Mikaela (Miles), Brian (Heidi), Nathan (Jessica), Jana (Logan), and Casey (Andrea); four great-grandchildren: Claire, Carter, Amelia, and Kevin; his sister Trish Slevin Mantoani (Glenn) and family; many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins; and so many dear and treasured friends from across the nation-all of us recipients of a copy of his 549-page book, thus the short obituary. A funeral Mass for Ed will be held on Saturday, January 27 at 10:30 AM, St. Vincent Church, 1 Saint Vincent Dr., San Rafael, CA. Reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ed and Jan Slevin Congressional Internship Endowment, by giving online at www.giving.calpoly.edu or by mail to the Cal Poly Foundation, University Advancement, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA 93407. The endowment enables Cal Poly students, regardless of discipline or professional interest, to "Learn by Doing," how government works. Online condolences at adobecreekfuneralhome. com

Not sure what to say?

I met Ed when he hired me to do fundraising for a congressional campaign. I explained I didn't do fund raising, it was not in my experience. He said "you will learn" and I did. He did that...he got people to do different things and grow outside their comfort zones. It was a great experience and will always remember Ed, an amazing person.

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines in 1987-1989, and Ed was country director for the first half of my time there. He was a son-of-a-gun, highly spirited, took no guff from us whiny young volunteers. I appreciate him now but probably didn't sufficiently appreciate him then. He was the first person I ever met who stood while working--way ahead of the Standing Desk trend. He seemed indestructible. I'm sorry for his family's loss, and I hope he had a great life after he left the Philippines.
